At first glance this rustic kitchen looks so authentic, one would think it was constructed 100 years ago. Situated in the Rocky Mountains, this second home is the gathering place for family ski vacations and is the definition of luxury among the beautiful yet rough terrain. A hand-forged hood boldly stands in the middle of the room, commanding attention even through the sturdy log beams both above and to the sides of the work/gathering space. This end of the kitchen was originally walled off into two separate rooms. A smaller room was on the left which was a larder and the right had a small eating area for servants., hence the two different sized windows. I created a large sweeping curved to over a support beam that was structurally required once the walls were removed and then completed the curve with custom designed brackets. The custom built banquette has a leather seat and fabric back. The table I designed and a local worker made it from a felled walnut tree on the property.

What was once a kitchen and dining area was enlarged to create an open floor plan including a large kitchen with seating for 5 plus a dining area and lounge area with fireplace. Instead of burying the beam in the ceiling, we decided to expose it and make it a feature in the space.

Here you can see the full kitchen space. The black & blue island is a nice accent to break up the natural brown hues of the flooring, cabinets, and granite counter top. High set pendant lights add function and beauty without being obstructive when working on the island.

This curved multi level Island is the focal point of this kitchen with stone front and flat panel wood cabinetry. The stained full overlay Shaker style cabinetry is accented with stone backsplash and stainless steel appliances. The pendant lighting is by Kichler. (Ryan Hainey)
