The old Kitchen had natural wood cabinets that extended to the ceiling and dark stone countertops. Kitchen remodel within the existing 12′ x 13′ footprint. By vaulting the ceilings, neutralizing the palette and adding skylights, we brought in more volume and light to the space. These elements along with the window over the sink make the space feel much larger and lighter.

We turned this home's two-car garage into a Studio ADU in Van Nuys. The Studio ADU is fully equipped to live independently from the main house. The ADU has a kitchenette, living room space, closet, bedroom space, and a full bathroom. Upon demolition and framing, we reconfigured the garage to be the exact layout we planned for the open concept ADU. We installed brand new windows, drywall, floors, insulation, foundation, and electrical units. The kitchenette has to brand new appliances from the brand General Electric. The stovetop, refrigerator, and microwave have been installed seamlessly into the custom kitchen cabinets. The kitchen has a beautiful stone-polished countertop from the company, Ceasarstone, called Blizzard. The off-white color compliments the bright white oak tone of the floor and the off-white walls. The bathroom is covered with beautiful white marble accents including the vanity and the shower stall. The shower has a custom shower niche with white marble hexagon tiles that match the shower pan of the shower and shower bench. The shower has a large glass-higned door and glass enclosure. The single bowl vanity has a marble countertop that matches the marble tiles of the shower and a modern fixture that is above the square mirror. The studio ADU is perfect for a single person or even two. There is plenty of closet space and bedroom space to fit a queen or king-sized bed. It has a brand new ductless air conditioner that keeps the entire unit nice and cool.

Gut renovation of a triplex apartment in New York city meat packing area. In this project, we identified the challenge of renovating a triplex as finding a way to integrate the stairs, so as to not take up the entire width of a narrow house, as well as to minimize the feeling of constantly having to run up and down to connect floors. This twelve-foot-wide townhouse consists of a cellar living room, a master bedroom suite on the upper floor, and a kitchen and dining area on the entry level. In trying to weave together these different floors, the aim of the project was to transform the stairs and steps into a fluid space that combines transition and rest. The steps were designed to be integrated with the architecture, cantilevering from the wall and almost disappearing. The living room on the ground plane folds into the garden through steps and a full-window wall, effectively extending the garden into the living room. From the garden to the entry level, the stairs were transformed into a platform and space for meditation within the open-space living room, dining room and kitchen. The introduction of a skylight midway through the length of the triplex permits natural light to flow to the back of the home, blending into the natural light coming in through the window facing the garden. The skylight also revealed a view of the trees hanging over the townhouse, framing the master bedroom suite from above and extending down with a view towards the garden

Minimalist kitchen with vastly improved functionality. We added a peninsula with drop-zone storage at entry side, fridge and pantry opposite. The bamboo-clad peninsula quickly became the intuitive gathering space. We especially love how the end overhang follows the diagonal geometry of the hallway walls.

This Escondido area homeowner came to Specialty Home Improvement looking to build a living space for an aging relative. ADUs, also often known as “granny flats” or “in-law suites” are perfect for aging-in-place, short or long-term rentals, or for extra space on your property to increase the value of your home. The Challenge: Design an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) and living space for an elderly relative on a fixed budget. The space is needed to provide as much complete independence and privacy for the relative as possible. The ADU also needed to fit a specific area in the backyard that did not impede on the existing outdoor entertainment area or pool. Since the area of the build is located in a warmer area of San Diego’s North County, summertime power consumption and indoor temperature were a concern. The Solution: For budget purposes, the shape of the unit was kept as a basic rectangle, since odd shapes and angles present challenges and additional costs to engineer and build. Since there was the possibility of guests or perhaps more than one person at a time using the ADU, the bathroom was given an independent entry. A closet was placed between the bathroom and the bedroom to help provide a sound buffer. Floors were designed as polished concrete to help maintain a cooler ambient temperature during the summer months. Light colors on the cabinets, walls, and ceilings along with dual paned vinyl windows provide ample light, temperature control, and ventilation.
