The Butler's Pantry was a part of a historic remodel that included a large addition. The butler's pantry became the connection to the new living wing of the home making the visual aesthetic very important. The style needed to be formal and elegant but also warm and inviting. The bow window set at counter height expands the view from the existing dining room and floods the area with light through the new French doors. Bay Area Custom Cabinetry: wine bar sideboard in family room connects to galley kitchen. This custom cabinetry built-in has two wind refrigerators installed side-by-side, one having a hinged door on the right side and the other on the left. The countertop is made of seafoam green granite and the backsplash is natural slate. These custom cabinets were made in our own award-winning artisanal cabinet studio. The work of the Greene and Greene brothers represents the pinnacle in American Bungalow Style architecture of the Arts and Crafts period. This home was designed by a student of Frank Loyd Wright in the 4x8 materials concept. The space moves through the home and an open plan was best suited for this interpretation. The brief for this unique kitchen was for it to be ‘a huge piece of furniture’. Well….. challenge accepted. To achieve this goal, we knew that we needed to approach the design from the details outwards, so we started with the cabinet doors. As the kitchen was to be over three levels rather than the traditional two, and because we wanted to articulate the idea of ‘furniture’ rather than ‘kitchen cabinets’, we designed three complimentary cabinet doors, each with their own personalities. Door pulls and pan hooks were made from beautiful hexagonal brass rods, and drawers were lined for cutlery, utensils and cookware. A slim shelf above the splashback provided a place for kitchen essentials like salt and oil. The mid-level of the kitchen was kept clean and uncluttered by means of our signature F+B ‘School House’ off-white lacquer, so that the wood didn’t feel overpowering. But the main event is the truss shelf that spans the open side of the kitchen like a portal frame. This beautifully detailed piece of Japanese-inspired design gives space for the client’s collection of Asian ceramics, and for our bespoke Japanese shoji paper lanterns, which light the space. A unique kitchen, handmade like only a furniture maker could.

We layed out this kitchen with as much separation as possible between the sink/washing area and cooking/prep area. Lots of custom storage solutions like drawers that hold dishes, spices and knives. We tried to mimimize the amount of walking and bumping into each other by having everything well though out and located. The new 9' window brings in a ton of light & air and a view of the great backyard. We did natural cherry to blend in with the rest of the house's original gum wood moldings & doors.

This home, created in the early 60's by an architect who served under F.L. Wright, was a natural candidate for an ultimate bungalow kitchen. Featuring a room within a room, the kitchen is separate by part of the dining room and living rooms. The details in the design were meticulously executed and are a serious reflection of the skill set and commitment of Jaeger & Ernst custom cabinet makers.
