Virginia AIA Merit Award for Excellence in Interior Design | The renovated apartment is located on the third floor of the oldest building on the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville. The existing structure built in 1843 was in sorry shape — framing, roof, insulation, windows, mechanical systems, electrical and plumbing were all completely renewed to serve for another century or more. What used to be a dark commercial space with claustrophobic offices on the third floor and a completely separate attic was transformed into one spacious open floor apartment with a sleeping loft. Transparency through from front to back is a key intention, giving visual access to the street trees in front, the play of sunlight in the back and allowing multiple modes of direct and indirect natural lighting. A single cabinet “box” with hidden hardware and secret doors runs the length of the building, containing kitchen, bathroom, services and storage. All kitchen appliances are hidden when not in use. Doors to the left and right of the work surface open fully for access to wall oven and refrigerator. Functional and durable stainless-steel accessories for the kitchen and bath are custom designs and fabricated locally. The sleeping loft stair is both foreground and background, heavy and light: the white guardrail is a single 3/8” steel plate, the treads and risers are folded perforated steel.

Comfortable, glare-free, and all LED makes this lighting project special and gives the architecture a big boost. The direct / indirect suspended configuration here in the kitchen dims beautifully and the lighting under the counter top and undercabinet in invisible except for the great contribution it makes.

Restructuration complète d'une maison de ville. ÉTAT DES LIEUX: Construite dans un ancien atelier, la maison s’élève sur trois niveaux + mezzanines. Idéalement située en plein centre ville, en secteur sauvegardé, elle est en bon état mais comporte des défauts. MISSION: Nous sommes intervenus pour repenser les espaces, maximiser la circulation de la lumière naturelle dans toute la maison, l'adapter au mode de vie des occupants. Le style atelier d’origine a été volontairement conservé et affirmé. Ici, au rez-de-chaussée, le mur en pierre d’origine a été mis en valeur ; du mobilier en acier noir a été dessiné et créé sur mesure, de même que les façades des meubles en chêne lamellé-collé. Une grande table haute en acier noir dessinée sur-mesure marque la frontière entre cuisine et salon. La pièce s'ouvre sur la cour arborée aux beaux jours.

Diese Küche verbindet Holz und Stahl. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Designerin bb coyle ist diese Küche entstanden. Die Fronten aus Eiche mit speziell angefertigten Griffnuten aus gezundertem Stahl. Auch der Oberkasten ist durch seine Proportion auf den Raum mit 3,6 m angepasst.
