On estate acreage near Montpelier, this home was inspired by a Southern Living farmhouse vernacular design brought to the architect by the owner. With South Carolina architect, Wayne Crocker, and a Texas client, Virginia based Smith & Robertson was pre-selected as the builder and collaborated with landscape architect Buddy Spencer to create this estate quality masterpiece. Major Remodel and Addition to a Charming French Country Style Home in Willow Glen Architect: Robin McCarthy, Arch Studio, Inc. Construction: Joe Arena Construction Photography by Mark Pinkerton

This countryside farmhouse was remodeled and added on to by removing an interior wall separating the kitchen from the dining/living room, putting an addition at the porch to extend the kitchen by 10', installing an IKEA kitchen cabinets and custom built island using IKEA boxes, custom IKEA fronts, panels, trim, copper and wood trim exhaust wood, wolf appliances, apron front sink, and quartz countertop. The bathroom was redesigned with relocation of the walk-in shower, and installing a pottery barn vanity. the main space of the house was completed with luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout. A beautiful transformation with gorgeous views of the Willamette Valley.

A New England inspired kitchen/dining/living space with rolling library ladder feature. Beautifully set in a barn conversion within the grounds of a 15th Century farmhouse. Before the renovation, this 17th century farmhouse was a rabbit warren of small dark rooms with low ceilings. A new owner wanted to keep the character but modernize the house, so CTA obliged, transforming the house completely. The family room, a large but very low ceiling room, was radically transformed by removing the ceiling to expose the roof structure above and rebuilding a more open new stair; the exposed beams were salvaged from an historic barn elsewhere on the property. The kitchen was moved to the former Dining Room, and also opened up to show the vaulted roof. The mud room and laundry were rebuilt to connect the farmhouse to a Barn (See “Net Zero Barn” project), also using salvaged timbers. Original wide plank pine floors were carefully numbered, replaced, and matched where needed. Historic rooms in the front of the house were carefully restored and upgraded, and new bathrooms and other amenities inserted where possible. The project is also a net zero energy project, with solar panels, super insulated walls, and triple glazed windows. CTA also assisted the owner with selecting all interior finishes, furniture, and fixtures. This project won “Best in Massachusetts” at the 2019 International Interior Design Association and was the 2020 Recipient of a Design Citation by the Boston Society of Architects. Modern and rustic kitchen. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the custom 6'x6' center island made from barn board. This island accommodates the family's five children as it seats seven people. Dark cabinets frame this large space bringing ones eye to the far wall. The bar is set-off by hand-painted glass tiles that run all the way to the ceiling. The glass bar shelves almost disappear from view.
