This kitchen is in a small 100 year old home in the center of the historic district of town. Maximizing the use of available space and imbuing this well-used, functioning kitchen with rich detail and elegance were the two most important aspects of the project. Except for being able to borrow a small amount of space from an adjacent hallway to accommodate the depth of the refrigerator, pantry and drawers on one end wall, there was no other way to expand the footprint of the kitchen. Since we had already remodeled and upgraded the décor in most of the rest of the house and since the kitchen opened into the dining room, we wanted to create a “little jewel box” of a kitchen that was dressy enough to blend with the surrounding areas. Extensive use of Calcutta marble and a mirror-backed cabinet with glass doors provide the desired sparkle and elegance while the existing oak floor and a thick mahogany countertop visually warm the room. Custom cabinets provide the necessary storage, and we found the perfect antique rug to add color. Hand painted tiles above the stove, the custom hood, and an elegant faucet underscore the theme. “Fun” elements include the imported French stool and the portrait of the homeowner’s cats placed just above their feeding area. This 3200 square foot home features a maintenance free exterior of LP Smartside, corrugated aluminum roofing, and native prairie landscaping. The design of the structure is intended to mimic the architectural lines of classic farm buildings. The outdoor living areas are as important to this home as the interior spaces; covered and exposed porches, field stone patios and an enclosed screen porch all offer expansive views of the surrounding meadow and tree line. The home’s interior combines rustic timbers and soaring spaces which would have traditionally been reserved for the barn and outbuildings, with classic finishes customarily found in the family homestead. Walls of windows and cathedral ceilings invite the outdoors in. Locally sourced reclaimed posts and beams, wide plank white oak flooring and a Door County fieldstone fireplace juxtapose with classic white cabinetry and millwork, tongue and groove wainscoting and a color palate of softened paint hues, tiles and fabrics to create a completely unique Door County homestead. Kitchen in newly remodeled home- entire building design by Maraya Design, built by Droney Construction. Arto terra cotta floors, hand waxed, newly designed rustic open beam ceiling, plaster hood, white painted cabinetry, oak counters, and leathered ocean black granite island counter. Limestone backsplash. Light painted walls with dark wood flooring. Walls with thick plaster arches, simple and intricate tile designs, feel very natural and earthy in the warm Southern California sun. Plaster range hood and custom painted Malibu tile back splash. Stained wood beams and trusses, planked ceilings over wide planked oak floors with several shapes of hand dark waxed terra cotta tiles. Leathered black granite and wood counters int ehkitchen, along with a long island. Plaster fireplace with tile surround and brick hearth, tie into the patio spaces all with the same red brick paving. We wanted to design a kitchen that would be sympathetic to the original features of our client's Georgian townhouse while at the same time function as the focal point for a busy household. The brief was to design a light, unfussy and elegant kitchen to lessen the effects of the slightly low-ceilinged room. Jack Trench Ltd responded to this by designing a hand-painted kitchen with echoes of an 18th century Georgian farmhouse using a light Oak and finishing with a palette of heritage yellow.
