WINNER: Silver Award – One-of-a-Kind Custom or Spec 4,001 – 5,000 sq ft, Best in American Living Awards, 2019 Affectionately called The Magnolia, a reference to the architect's Southern upbringing, this project was a grass roots exploration of farmhouse architecture. Located in Phoenix, Arizona’s idyllic Arcadia neighborhood, the home gives a nod to the area’s citrus orchard history. Echoing the past while embracing current millennial design expectations, this just-complete speculative family home hosts four bedrooms, an office, open living with a separate “dirty kitchen”, and the Stone Bar. Positioned in the Northwestern portion of the site, the Stone Bar provides entertainment for the interior and exterior spaces. With retracting sliding glass doors and windows above the bar, the space opens up to provide a multipurpose playspace for kids and adults alike. Nearly as eyecatching as the Camelback Mountain view is the stunning use of exposed beams, stone, and mill scale steel in this grass roots exploration of farmhouse architecture. White painted siding, white interior walls, and warm wood floors communicate a harmonious embrace in this soothing, family-friendly abode. For this project, the homeowner wanted the main living spaces to be open and flow easily from one room to another. We expanded the kitchen to include more cabinetry and larger work spaces with greater accessibility to both. By removing an odd half-wall between the kitchen and living room, converting an out-of-place wet bar in the entry into a closet, installing new windows for better natural light, and reconstructing the main entry archway, we helped turn this otherwise dark and closed-off space into an expansive, light-filled place of ease.

A meeting... Of materials: stainless steel, glass, white Carrara marble, wood, black Marquinia stone. Of styles, Farmhouse Shaker style contemporary and classic yet gives of the warm feeling of a rustic vibe interior design, creating a third, which transcends time. Match of finishes: hammering, antique brass finish, trowel, natural finish, matte, shiny reflective glass. An encounter between optimal functionality and pure aesthetics, which coexist in perfect balance. Blue avio, a color blue kitchen, played down by the large contemporary island and Shaker Style Cabinets, which aesthetically create a clever play of depth. The workhorse is undoubtedly his island, a dialogue of styles between classic and contemporary, a combination of materials in which honey-colored wood meets Nero Marquinia stone in a brushed finish and marble. The visual contrast alone, but also the Italian excellence of the material quality, make it a true work of art.

A light-filled extension on a country cottage transformed a small kitchen into a bigger family functional and sociable space. Our clients love their beautiful country cottage located in the countryside on the edge of Canterbury but needed more space. They built an extension and Burlanes were commissioned to created a country style kitchen that maintained the integrity of the property with some elegant modern additions.

This custom kitchen is designed for the gourmet chef with sophisticated and refined taste. Surrounded by high transom windows, the shaker-style cabinetry is bold and masculine. Maple is used in contrasting tones, with a hand-rubbed finish. A special feature in the kitchen is the cook zone, framed by a band of obsidian black painted maple that frames the Miele gas range in an art-like way. A professional line of appliances, like the Miele integrated refrigerator, dishwasher, ContourLine warming drawer, single convection oven, microwave drawer oven, and GE Monogram Wine Reserve complete the culinary package.

Gracious and timeless, this coordinating butler’s pantry and open dining room featuring a custom hood surround are the heart of this stunning home. O'Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago worked on this custom home for the builders of Tiburon Homes as their personal residence. The biggest challenge/opportunity of this kitchen was the size and openness of the space. We created natural functions in the large space, dividing it into four main areas: casual dining, butler’s pantry, serving station, and main kitchen. The division was achieved through a variety of cabinet and finish styles, yet the space still feels cohesive, quiet, and organized. The finish is Oxford rift and quartered oak and with a soft ceruse, a favorite in the O’Brien Harris library. The cabinetry has integrated hardware—campaign-style pulls on the drawers give it a furniture feel. In the kitchen, a finishing touch is oak banding around the cooktop and range cabinetry and refrigeration units. We integrated the oak finish into the island and raised it up to feel lighter, adding polished stainless-steel cuffs to the legs. obrienharris.com
