A modest single storey extension to an attractive property in the crescent known as Hilltop in Linlithgow Bridge. The scheme design seeks to create open plan living space with kitchen and dining amenity included.
Large glazed sliding doors create connection to a new patio space which is level with the floor of the house. A glass corner window provides views out to the garden, whilst a strip of rooflights allows light to penetrate deep inside. A new structural opening is formed to open the extension to the existing house and create a new open plan hub for family life. The new extension is provided with underfloor heating to complement the traditional radiators within the existing property.
Materials are deliberately restrained, white render, timber cladding and alu-clad glazed screens to create a clean contemporary aesthetic.

The remodelling of a ground floor garden flat in northwest London offers the opportunity to revisit the principles of compact living applied in previous designs.
The 54 sqm flat in Willesden Green is dramatically transformed by re-orientating the floor plan towards the open space at the back of the plot. Home office and bedroom are relocated to the front of the property, living accommodations at the back.
The rooms within the outrigger have been opened up and the former extension rebuilt with a higher flat roof, punctured by an elongated light well. The corner glazing directs one’s view towards the sleek limestone garden.
A storage wall with an homogeneous design not only serves multiple functions - from wardrobe to linen cupboard, utility and kitchen -, it also acts as the agent connecting the front and the back of the apartment.
This device also serves to accentuate the stretched floor plan and to give a strong sense of direction to the project.
The combination of bold colours and strong materials result in an interior space with modernist influences yet sombre and elegant and where the statuario marble fireplace becomes an opulent centrepiece with a minimal design.

In keeping with the materiality of the wall cladding and the cantilevered design of the building, a simple lightweight aluminium and corrugated metal awning was positioned over the timber entry platform to provide rain shelter.

This modern addition elevates the traditional ranch house and provides a new level of sophistication. In addition to the house's new look, the homeowners gained much needed interior space, which includes a mudroom. The mudroom functions to collect backpacks from the kids, house the dog-bed and toys, as well as catch shoes and coats coming in from outside.
The additional space also extended and brightened the living room area. Outside, there is a beautiful new and inviting deck to catch some afternoon sun.

Designed in 1970 for an art collector, the existing referenced 70’s architectural principles. With its cadence of ‘70’s brick masses punctuated by a garage and a 4-foot-deep entrance recess. This recess, however, didn’t convey to the interior, which was occupied by disjointed service spaces. To solve, service spaces are moved and reorganized in open void in the garage. (See plan) This also organized the home: Service & utility on the left, reception central, and communal living spaces on the right.
To maintain clarity of the simple one-story 70’s composition, the second story add is recessive. A flex-studio/extra bedroom and office are designed ensuite creating a slender form and orienting them front to back and setting it back allows the add recede. Curves create a definite departure from the 70s home and by detailing it to "hover like a thought" above the first-floor roof and mentally removable sympathetic add.Existing unrelenting interior walls and a windowless entry, although ideal for fine art was unconducive for the young family of three. Added glass at the front recess welcomes light view and the removal of interior walls not only liberate rooms to communicate with each other but also reinform the cleared central entry space as a hub.
Even though the renovation reinforms its relationship with art, the joy and appreciation of art was not dismissed. A metal sculpture lost in the corner of the south side yard bumps the sculpture at the front entrance to the kitchen terrace over an added pedestal. (See plans) Since the roof couldn’t be railed without compromising the one-story '70s composition, the sculpture garden remains physically inaccessible however mirrors flanking the chimney allow the sculptures to be appreciated in three dimensions. The mirrors also afford privacy from the adjacent Tudor's large master bedroom addition 16-feet away.
