Tomecek Studio Architecture
Photograhpy by Braden Gunem
Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.

Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Heating is by passive solar design, supplemented by a geothermal radiant floor system. Cooling uses a whole house fan and a passive air flow system. The passive system is created with the cupola, windows, transoms and passive venting for cooling, rather than a forced air system. Because fresh water is not available from a well nor county water, water will be provided by rainwater harvesting. The water will be collected from a gutter system, go into a series of nine holding tanks and then go through a water filtration system to provide drinking water for the home. A greywater system will then recycle water from the sinks and showers to be reused in the toilets. Low-flow fixtures will be used throughout the home to conserve water.

The Porch House sits perched overlooking a stretch of the Yellowstone River valley. With an expansive view of the majestic Beartooth Mountain Range and its close proximity to renowned fishing on Montana’s Stillwater River you have the beginnings of a great Montana retreat. This structural insulated panel (SIP) home effortlessly fuses its sustainable features with carefully executed design choices into a modest 1,200 square feet. The SIPs provide a robust, insulated envelope while maintaining optimal interior comfort with minimal effort during all seasons. A twenty foot vaulted ceiling and open loft plan aided by proper window and ceiling fan placement provide efficient cross and stack ventilation. A custom square spiral stair, hiding a wine cellar access at its base, opens onto a loft overlooking the vaulted living room through a glass railing with an apparent Nordic flare. The “porch” on the Porch House wraps 75% of the house affording unobstructed views in all directions. It is clad in rusted cold-rolled steel bands of varying widths with patterned steel “scales” at each gable end. The steel roof connects to a 3,600 gallon rainwater collection system in the crawlspace for site irrigation and added fire protection given the remote nature of the site. Though it is quite literally at the end of the road, the Porch House is the beginning of many new adventures for its owners.

This image is a perfect example of the new extension and how it blends seamlessly with the original 1940's part of the home. Red brick to match the existing with a MaxLine feature cladding section, and light well windows.

Weekend get-a-way or summer cabin? Do you desire a rustic barn interior ‘feel’ without the expense that most reclaimed products produce.
FROM WORKS
Located within the Whalley Range Conservation Area in Manchester, the project creates a new master bedroom suite whilst sensitively refurbishing the home throughout to create a light filled, refined and quiet home.
Externally the rear dormer extension references the deep red terracotta and brick synonymous to Manchester with pigmented red standing seam zinc to create an elegant extension.

The new addition features 3 dormers on the front with plenty of windows to allow natural light in.
The taller roof line allows room for the necessary ceiling height on the 2nd floor and doubles the size of the home with an extra 996 sqft.
Barn Red steel lap siding with a wood grain finish provides a durable and long life material for the exterior of the addition
The addition matches the style of the home as well as the garage peaks
The white trim, fascia, and gutters add to the clean look contrasting with the red siding

New zoning codes paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit in this homes Minneapolis location. This new unit allows for independent multi-generational housing within close proximity to a primary residence and serves visiting family, friends, and an occasional Airbnb renter. The strategic use of glass, partitions, and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy interior while keeping the square footage below 400 square feet. Vertical siding and awning windows create a fresh, yet complementary addition.
Christopher Strom was recognized in the “Best Contemporary” category in Marvin Architects Challenge 2017. The judges admired the simple addition that is reminiscent of the traditional red barn, yet uses strategic volume and glass to create a dramatic contemporary living space.

Elsternwick House…the design concept of the first floor being like a tree house perched above the existing home for our clients two young boys was the inspiration for this alterations and additions project. The first floor addition playfully peeks over the original art deco home when viewed from the street and is nestled into the tree canopy at the rear. The new first floor exterior cladding was selected in manor red colorbond standing seam sitting in contrast to the crisp white render and windows – reminiscent of traditional ‘falu red’ cottages & barns from Sweden and Norway.
