This view of the back of the house highlights how the paint colors come together. The crisp white helps define the shape of the house. At the same time, it subtly highlights the doors, staircase and window frame. The two blues create a sense of calm while at the same time harmonizing with the property’s trees and plants.

Our client fell in love with the original 80s style of this house. However, no part of it had been updated since it was built in 1981. Both the style and structure of the home needed to be drastically updated to turn this house into our client’s dream modern home. We are also excited to announce that this renovation has transformed this 80s house into a multiple award-winning home, including a major award for Renovator of the Year from the Vancouver Island Building Excellence Awards. The original layout for this home was certainly unique. In addition, there was wall-to-wall carpeting (even in the bathroom!) and a poorly maintained exterior.
There were several goals for the Modern Revival home. A new covered parking area, a more appropriate front entry, and a revised layout were all necessary. Therefore, it needed to have square footage added on as well as a complete interior renovation. One of the client’s key goals was to revive the modern 80s style that she grew up loving. Alfresco Living Design and A. Willie Design worked with Made to Last to help the client find creative solutions to their goals.

Back view of beach house features new windows, exterior paint, balcony w/cable railing; the balcony also serves as the roof for the aluminum screen room below that was built on the new Azek decks. On the left side of the house a custom made awning was built using cedar and metal roofing to provide shelter to the side entrance and also reduces the heat that is transferred from being exposed to sun. An exterior shower was installed to the right of the side entrance door. (there is a close up photo posted of the shower)

The homeowners of this mid-century New England style house in Newton chose a monochromatic color scheme for their exterior paint. They went with two different blues, light on the siding, and darker on the shutters, and a clean white for the trim and accents. This is a photo of the front of the house, which shows off the colors in their best light.

This photo of the side of the house shows how dappled sunlight from nearby trees interacts with the exterior paint color. It almost looks like a completely different shade of blue compared to the other photos. You’ll notice the wiring in this picture. Just like the greenery, we always ensure that no drips or streaks end up on these.

This is another side view of the house. In this close up photo, you can see how the white used for the window frames, guttering, and downspout helps to break up the blue of the siding. The surrounding trees and bushes help to enhance the exterior color scheme’s sense of tranquility. This is a good example of how you can choose a simple color palette yet still achieve a stunning and dramatic look.

You’ll notice something slightly different in this photo. The owners decided to paint the stair railings in the same shade of blue as the walls, rather than the white of the trims. Since the decking area is also white, this helps to break away from having too much white in one area. This keeps the area from looking washed out and hasn’t detracted from the house at all.
