A tea pot, being a vessel, is defined by the space it contains, it is not the tea pot that is important, but the space.
Crispin Sartwell
Located on a lake outside of Milwaukee, the Vessel House is the culmination of an intense 5 year collaboration with our client and multiple local craftsmen focused on the creation of a modern analogue to the Usonian Home.
As with most residential work, this home is a direct reflection of it’s owner, a highly educated art collector with a passion for music, fine furniture, and architecture. His interest in authenticity drove the material selections such as masonry, copper, and white oak, as well as the need for traditional methods of construction.
The initial diagram of the house involved a collection of embedded walls that emerge from the site and create spaces between them, which are covered with a series of floating rooves. The windows provide natural light on three sides of the house as a band of clerestories, transforming to a floor to ceiling ribbon of glass on the lakeside.
The Vessel House functions as a gallery for the owner’s art, motorcycles, Tiffany lamps, and vintage musical instruments – offering spaces to exhibit, store, and listen. These gallery nodes overlap with the typical house program of kitchen, dining, living, and bedroom, creating dynamic zones of transition and rooms that serve dual purposes allowing guests to relax in a museum setting.
Through it’s materiality, connection to nature, and open planning, the Vessel House continues many of the Usonian principles Wright advocated for.

We modernized and opened up the home with a lot of windows. This brightened the spaces inside and helped to open up the house.

Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.

Acorn Deck House Company
The Bershire Deck House is a perfect escape, located in a remote mountain town in western Massachusetts. It features a welcoming great room, which greets visitors with spectacular, floor-to-ceiling views of the landscape beyond; a deck for relaxing and entertaining; and a private, entry-level master suite. The lower level also features two additional bedrooms, a family room and unfinished space for future expansion.
Marvin
This project reconstructed a family summer home after the original structure was completely burned down by a freak accident. The new design emphasizes the connection to the water always loved by the homeowners in the home they had lost. Differing from the old house, the main entry now opens directly onto a window-wall with views of the lake—and the winter-snowcapped mountain peaks beyond. The floor plan was designed to work efficiently not only when the two retired owners are there alone, but also when the house is filled with their three adult children’s growing families. Marvin products helped capture the experience of living in a building sited at the water’s edge. Sunlight and circulation concerns were easily and effectively addressed—to the homeowners’ lasting satisfaction.

A unique historic renovation. Our windows maintain the historic look with modern performance. Equipped with tilt and turn, wood aluminum triple-pane, Glo European Windows.
The Glo wood aluminum triple pane windows were chosen for this historic renovation to maintain comfortable temperatures and provide clear views. Our client wanted to match the historic aesthetic and continue their goal of energy efficient updates. High performance values with multiple air seals were required to keep the building comfortable through Missoula's changing weather. Warm wood interior frames were selected and the original paint color chosen to match the original design aesthetic, while durable aluminum frames provide protection from the elements.
