With a grand total of 1,247 square feet of living space, the Lincoln Deck House was designed to efficiently utilize every bit of its floor plan. This home features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car detached garage and boasts an impressive great room, whose soaring ceilings and walls of glass welcome the outside in to make the space feel one with nature.

Deep in the woods, this mountain cabin just outside Asheville, NC, was designed as the perfect weekend getaway space. The owner uses it as an Airbnb for income. From the wooden cathedral ceiling to the nature-inspired loft railing, from the wood-burning free-standing stove, to the stepping stone walkways—everything is geared toward easy relaxation. For maximum interior space usage, the sleeping loft is accessed via an outside stairway.

This picture gives you an idea how the garage, main house, and ADU are arranged on the property. Our goal was to minimize the impact to the backyard, maximize privacy of each living space from one another, maximize light for each building, etc. One way in which we were able to accomplish that was building the ADU slab on grade to keep it as low to the ground as possible and minimize it's solar footprint on the property. Cutting up the roof not only made it more interesting from the house above but also helped with solar footprint. The garage was reduced in length by about 8' to accommodate the ADU. This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a sustainable, compact home for the homeowner's aging parent. Although the home is only 660 sq. ft., it has a bedroom, full kitchen (with dishwasher!) and even an elevator for the aging parents. We used many strategically-placed windows and skylights to make the space feel more expansive. The ADU is also full of sustainable features, including the solar panels on the roof.

ガルバリウム鋼板の外壁に、レッドシダーとモルタルグレーの塗り壁が映える個性的な外観。間口の狭い、所謂「うなぎの寝床」とよばれる狭小地のなかで最大限、開放感ある空間とするために2階リビングとしました。２階向かって左手の突出している部分はお子様のためのスタディスペースとなっており、隣家と向き合わない方角へ向いています。バルコニー手摺や物干し金物をオリジナルの製作物とし、細くシャープに仕上げることで個性的な建物の形状が一層際立ちます。

In keeping with the materiality of the wall cladding and the cantilevered design of the building, a simple lightweight aluminium and corrugated metal awning was positioned over the timber entry platform to provide rain shelter.

This backyard cottage was built for the owners parents to use as a pied-a-terre while visiting. It houses a generous one car garage with a 320 sf apartment above. It is a cheerful private space for their long visits. The old apple tree was preserved and is slowly being pruned back into shape. Jim Houston
