Sometimes, the smallest projects are the most rewarding. I designed this small front porch for a client in Fort Mitchell, KY. My client lived for years with a ragged front porch and awning embarrassed by her front entry. We refurbished and extended the concrete stoop, added a new hand rail, and most importantly a new covered entry. The timber front door proclaims the entry, whilst louvre windows filter the breeze through the home. The living areas remain private, whilst public areas are visible and inviting. A bespoke letterbox and entry bench tease the workmanship within.

The Hide is a stunning, two-storey residential dwelling sitting above a Nature Reserve in the coastal resort of Bude. Replacing an existing house of no architectural merit, the new design evolved a central core with two wings responding to site context by angling the wing elements outwards away from the core, allowing the occupiers to experience and take in the panoramic views. The large-glazed areas of the southern façade and slot windows horizontally and vertically aligned capture views all-round the dwelling. Low-angled, mono-pitched, zinc standing seam roofs were used to contain the impact of the new building on its sensitive setting, with the roofs extending and overhanging some three feet beyond the dwelling walls, sheltering and covering the new building. The roofs were designed to mimic the undulating contours of the site when viewed from surrounding vantage points, concealing and absorbing this modern form into the landscape. We transformed an unfinished breezeway space with concrete floors into a gorgeous mudroom with custom lockers, guest storage, and Command Center. To save money, I handpainted the existing concrete floors in a flower pattern. Each family member has their own floor to ceiling locker. We replaced bulky slider doors with a new fiberglass door. A modern, yet traditionally inspired SW Portland home with sweeping views of Mount Hood features an exposed timber frame core reclaimed from a local rail yard building. A welcoming exterior entrance canopy continues inside to the foyer and piano area before vaulting above the living room. A ridge skylight illuminates the central space and the loft beyond. The elemental materials of stone, bronze, Douglas Fir, Maple, Western Redcedar. and Walnut carry on a tradition of northwest architecture influenced by Japanese/Asian sensibilities. Mindful of saving energy and resources, this home was outfitted with PV panels and a geothermal mechanical system, contributing to a high performing envelope efficient enough to achieve several sustainability honors. The main home received LEED Gold Certification and the adjacent ADU LEED Platinum Certification, and both structures received Earth Advantage Platinum Certification.
