Clerestory windows above with a 10 foot overhang allow wonderful natural light to pour in throughout the living spaces, while protecting the interior from the blistering Texas sun. The interiors are lively with varying ceiling heights, natural materials, and a soothing color palette. The owners of this beautiful estate home needed additional storage space and desired a private entry and parking space for family and friends. The new carriage house addition includes a gated entrance and parking for three vehicles, as well as a turreted entrance foyer, gallery space, and executive office with custom wood paneling and stone fireplace.

There were a few goals for this main level living space remodel, first and for most to enhance the breath taking views of the Tacoma Narrows Strait of the Puget Sound. Secondly to also enhance and restore the original mid-century architecture and lastly to modernize the spaces with style and functionality. The layout changed by removing the walls separating the kitchen and entryway from the living spaces along with reducing the coat closet from 72 inches wide to 48 wide opening up the entry space. The original wood wall provides the mid-century architecture by combining the wood wall with the rich cork floors and contrasting them both with the floor to ceiling crisp white stacked slate fireplace we created the modern feel the client desired. Adding to the contrast of the warm wood tones the kitchen features the cool grey custom modern cabinetry, white and grey quartz countertops with an eye popping blue crystal quartz on the raise island countertop and bar top. To balance the wood wall the bar cabinetry on the opposite side of the space was finished in a honey stain. The furniture pieces are primarily blue and grey hues to coordinate with the beautiful glass tiled backsplash and crystal blue countertops in the kitchen. Lastly the accessories and accents are a combination of oranges and greens to follow in the mid-century color pallet and contrast the blue hues.

The entry hall flooring is practical for the busy family members including their dog. Keeping the area simple cuts down on congestion when coming and going each day.

For this new family home, the interior design aesthetic was modern neutrals. Lots of bold charcoals, black, pale greys and whites, paired with timeless materials of timber, stone and concrete. The entry of this home features built-in cabinetry and wardrobes to maximize storage and help curb clutter. The small niche does double duty as a display area and a catch-all for keys and phones.

Gillian C. Rose Interior Design, LLC, designed the interiors of The Babizon. Inclusive of the lobby and premiere apartment layout, all kitchens & baths, as well as all architecture finishes and detailing ( doors, windows, etc.) This was a gut renovation of The Melrose Hotel, which had purchased The Barbizon Residence for Women. The original building was completed in 1927. This lobby renovation was completed in 2007. We since moved on to design several individual apartments up until 2016. The Lobby stones are 3 different types of Limestone. Our concept was to use the low ceilings to our advantage, by creating a more European environment, the ceiling height became an advantage. We incorporated the custom designed low profile LED ceiling fixture, again to emphasize a welcoming volume. Gillian C. Rose
