This is a single leaf swing gate beautifying and helping secure a Los Angeles home. The home is from the twenties and the driveway is very narrow (but still navigatable in a modern car). The gate is entirely constructed from heavy-duty aluminum and is a powder-coated blue-gray. MulhollandBrand.com designed, manufactured, and installed the gate.

BACKGROUND Glass-enclosed Vestibules are an uncommon, friendly entrance to any home. This 1917 Vestibule had been patched and repaired many times before being torn down. The design was a collaborative effort with Lee Meyer Architects; rebuilt to match other remodeling on this home. SOLUTION We rebuilt the structure with hand-built arched roof trusses, new columns and support beams, along with glass door panels, period trim, lighting and a beaded ceiling. Photo by Greg Schmidt.

Light and connections to gardens is brought about by simple alterations to an existing 1980 duplex. New fences and timber screens frame the street entry and provide sense of privacy while painting connection to the street. Extracting some components provides for internal courtyards that flood light to the interiors while creating valuable outdoor spaces for dining and relaxing.

The Cyclopian, out-of-scale window above the front door was replaced with two smaller windows that work proportionally better with the house. The curved steps gave way to new rectangular ones, and to add three-dimensionality, the entire entry way was extruded from the wall to form a small front porch, protecting users from the elements, as well as adding visual depth. Beautiful reclaimed Parefeuille tiles from the Provence region in France. These reclaimed French terracotta tiles were originally used as ceiling and subroofing tiles in traditional farm houses in Mediterranean France. The tiles were laid in between oak rafters and served as ceiling and a strong sublayer for the roof tiles to be mounted above. Vintage Elements reclaims these tiles and uses them for flooring and ceiling tiles. Although not often used as an outdoor flooring tiles, these reclaimed terracotta tiles will easily withstand moderate climates with light freezes. Their warm colors with nuances of pink, salmon, sand and red will instantly provide Mediterranean charm which can't be achieved with other flooring materials.
