Distressed, black cabinets and a neutral ceiling frame a kitchen accented with brushed nickel hardware, countertops of brushed black granite, stainless steel appliances (hood, stove, oven, microwave and refrigerator) and a brushed nickel faucet. Vintage, hand-blown amber glass pendants hang above rattan bar stools and dark walnut hardwoods, with a turquoise glass tile backsplash providing a pop of color.

The client’s coastal New England roots inspired this Shingle style design for a lakefront lot. With a background in interior design, her ideas strongly influenced the process, presenting both challenge and reward in executing her exact vision. Vintage coastal style grounds a thoroughly modern open floor plan, designed to house a busy family with three active children. A primary focus was the kitchen, and more importantly, the butler’s pantry tucked behind it. Flowing logically from the garage entry and mudroom, and with two access points from the main kitchen, it fulfills the utilitarian functions of storage and prep, leaving the main kitchen free to shine as an integral part of the open living area. The kitchen and baths in this home were a mix of styles, materials, and textures. The client wanted to incorporate many parts of his life into the space. We did this by including some masks he bought while traveling, along with a touch of Asian influence in the guest bathroom, and retro vibe in the master bath. We were commissioned in 2006 to refurbish and remodel a ground floor and basement maisonette within an 1840s stuccoed house in Notting Hill. From the outset, a priority was to remove various partitions and accretions that had been added over the years, in order to restore the original proportions of the two handsome ground floor rooms. The new stone fireplace and plaster cornice installed in the living room are in keeping with the period of the building.
