This tiny kitchen got the makeover of a lifetime. From dated 70's red and brown to light and bright black and white (plus some turquoise thrown in). We took this kitchen down to the studs so that we could start fresh. Included in the remodel was enclosing the equally tiny back porch which gives better access into the kitchen from the back deck.

I developed a floor plan that would remove the wall between the kitchen and laundry to create one large room. The door to the bathroom would be closed up. It was accessible from the bedroom on the other side. The room became 14’-10” by 11’-6”, large enough to include a small center island. Then I wrapped the perimeter walls with new white shaker style cabinets. We kept the sink under the window but made it a focal point with a white farm sink and new faucet. The range stayed in the same location below an original octagon window. The opposite wall is designed for function with full height storage on the left and a new side-by-side refrigerator with storage above. The shaker cabinets are complimented with 2 different colors of Caesarstone countertops. The perimeter is off-white with beige & gray speckles, while the center island has more contrast with the “Wild Rice” Caesarstone. In keeping with the Spanish architectural influence, a classic Spanish accent tile is featured on the backsplash. This little kitchen wasn’t functioning at its best and quickly became the biggest undertaking of this remodel. The original brick wall had not fared well over the years, and was in need of some serious structural help, so rebuilding the back of the house became our first order of business, but this let us increase the size of the windows and flood the kitchen with all that gorgeous northern light. We reimagined the layout of the kitchen to bring in some much-needed functionality, and we were even able to tuck in a beverage center. Aesthetically, we wanted the kitchen to feel bright and open, even as we utilized every square inch of storage we could get, so we selected a crisp light blue for the walls, white cabinets, and white tile for the backsplash. But we were dead set against this kitchen becoming a space that didn’t drip with charm, so we brough it handmade star and cross tiles on the backsplash (with a little pop to the beverage area tile with a hand painted design), a marble look quartz counter top, and touches of black and brass for a little glitz. We also carried the wood flooring from the rest of the home into the kitchen and designed a custom steel and wood island to bring warmth into this space. The laundry room & pantry were also updated to include lovely built-in storage and tie in with the finishes in the kitchen.

Yes, you read the title right. Small updates DO make a BIG difference. Whether it’s updating a color, finish, or even the smallest: changing out the hardware, these minor updates together can all make a big difference in the space. For our Flashback Friday Feature, we have a perfect example of how you can make some small updates to revamp the entire space! The best of all, we replaced the door and drawer fronts, and added a small cabinet (removing the soffit, making the cabinets go to the ceiling) making this space seem like it’s been outfitted with a brand new kitchen! If you ask us, that’s a great way of value engineering and getting the best value out of your dollars! To learn more about this project, continue reading below! Cabinets As mentioned above, we removed the existing cabinet door and drawer fronts and replaced them with a more updated shaker style door/drawer fronts supplied by Woodmont. We removed the soffits and added an extra cabinet on the cooktop wall, taking the cabinets to the ceiling. This small update provides additional storage, and gives the space a new look! Countertops Bye-bye laminate, and hello quartz! As our clients were starting to notice the wear-and-tear of their original laminate tops, they knew they wanted something durable and that could last. Well, what better to install than quartz? Providing our clients with something that’s not only easy to maintain, but also modern was exactly what they wanted in their updated kitchen! Backsplash The original backsplash was a plain white 4×4″ tile and left much to be desired. Having lived with this backsplash for years, our clients wanted something more exciting and eye-catching. I can safely say that this small update delivered! We installed an eye-popping glass tile in blues, browns, and whites from Hirsch Glass tile in the Gemstone Collection. Hardware You’d think hardware doesn’t make a huge difference in a space, but it does! It adds not only the feel of good quality but also adds some character to the space. Here we have installed Amerock Blackrock knobs and pulls in Satin Nickel. Other Fixtures To top off the functionality and usability of the space, we installed a new sink and faucet. The sink and faucet is something used every day, so having something of great quality is much appreciated especially when so frequently used. From Kohler, we have an under-mount castiron sink in Palermo Blue. From Blanco, we have a single-hole, and pull-out spray faucet. Flooring Last but not least, we installed cork flooring. The cork provides and soft and cushiony feel and is great on your feet!

This kitchen is truly the heart of this home and a real stunner! The brass elements in the light fixtures and appliances make this white and bright kitchen feel unique, modern, and joyful! The lantern-style pendants tie in the lighting in the dining room and are a real focal point in the kitchen. This is truly a happy kitchen to be in! The quartz countertops have the perfect light gray veining and will stand the test of time alongside the showstopping Cafe appliances, and woven barstools.
