This was such a fun project to work on! We took out walls enclosing the previously windowless kitchen and changed the dynamic of the home. The client can cook, interact with kids and friends and see outside - all basic and important things to maintaining happiness.

In designing the new layout for the kitchen, we decided to remove the pantry closet and expand into the former eat-in area. This gave us the opportunity to create a beautifully functional island with plenty of seating and prep space for multiple cooks in the kitchen. We were all still in love with the walnut flooring we installed during the first phase of this project and opted to lean into the classic tones and bring them into the cabinetry scheme. To balance all those gorgeous warm grains, we cooled the space down with a spunky hand painted tile that enlivens the space.

The small kitchen in this bungalow home was updated with fresh paint on existing cabinets, new quartz countertops, backsplash, hardware and lighting.

I developed a floor plan that would remove the wall between the kitchen and laundry to create one large room. The door to the bathroom would be closed up. It was accessible from the bedroom on the other side. The room became 14’-10” by 11’-6”, large enough to include a small center island. Then I wrapped the perimeter walls with new white shaker style cabinets. We kept the sink under the window but made it a focal point with a white farm sink and new faucet. The range stayed in the same location below an original octagon window. The opposite wall is designed for function with full height storage on the left and a new side-by-side refrigerator with storage above. This timeless kitchen is the perfect example of how rich color sets the mood. Inspired by Sherwin-Williams’ Dried Thyme, the green cabinetry brings a warm and contemporary look. The kitchen’s original layout is what attracted the owners to this home so with a few changes, the space now better fits the owners’ needs. Straightening out a wall by the large bay window provided space to move the dishwasher, and gave room to build a tall cabinet with organized pullout drawers next to the stove for easy access and storage. This also created room to build a hidden appliance garage and flipping the location of the island sink provided more accessibility to the stove. The bow front stove hood provides visual relief for the linear nature of the cabinets. Green ceramic tiles surround the porcelain herringbone tile in the contrasting niche dedicated to spices and oils, and the adjacent pot filler provides convenience. The island was increased in size to provide for more storage and metal domed pendants provide lighting for both prepping and eating. Double-wall ovens have side handles for easy opening and convenience and provide easy access in a busy kitchen area. I have been working as a kitchen and bath designer in the Pacific Northwest for 13 years. I love engaging with new clients, ascertaining their needs through various interviews and meetings and then collaborating as we build their finished concept together. The variety of design styles, room layouts and function changes so much between one person and the next that no two finished products are remotely the same. This fluidity allows for endless possibilities for exploration in my field. It keeps the job interesting and has always given me a particular sense of reward and accomplishment as we near completion. The greatest personal recompense in this chosen profession is being able to walk with a client through this process and come out the other side with that client feeling elated with the end result.

The new open kitchen features custom-made white shaker cabinets with gold pulls and knobs, black fixtures, new hardwood floors, white 5"X5" ceramic tile backsplash, Caesarstone Noble Grey countertops, breakfast bar with pattern cement tile detail, Thermador appliances and new wood clad windows painted black.

The existing timber shelf above the existing masonry chimney opening was also kept. A LED light strip was added to its underside to provide additional focus to this original feature. A powerpack rangehood was installed into the existing masonry chimney cavity. A feature tile was used to walls and floor of this area to house the freestanding hob / oven.
