Expanding the island gave the family more space to relax, work or entertain. The original island was less than half the size and housed the stove top, leaving little space for much else.

The open plan kitchen mixes simple wood-grained IKEA cabinets with a classic 1952 vintage O'Keefe & Merritt double oven, offset by a custom installation of vintage hand-painted Spanish tiles as a backsplash, set into classic subway tile. The coat closet under staircase made a convenient space for a walk in pantry. The pantry was formerly off breakfast room with large doors that made the breakfast area feel claustrophobic. We knocked out the back wall between former pantry and garage closet to make a compact dog room. The best way to make a small space liveable is to tackle those tight spaces and repurpose them. Have closets or cabinets overstuffed? Identify duplicates and lesser used items and pass them on to someone who needs them - use your excess to bless others in need without spending a dime. It’s a win-win!

Neutrals will never go out of fashion, they are safe, timeless and calming, but sometimes it’s good to be a little more adventurous. This couple opted for a strikingly vibrant Verdigris paint colour on most of their cabinetry, with just the island painted in a soothing greige colour Bone, both from Farrow and Ball. This room had originally been a living room with a feature chimney breast so instead of using the space for a cooker as usual, we opted to give centre stage to the Belfast sink so the owners could keep an eye on their little one in the adjoining family room when preparing food on the island. Taking the quartz upstand higher onto the chimney breast allowed for highly decorative wallpaper to be used above, without fear of it being splashed with washing up water. A tall breakfast larder on one side of the chimney is balanced by a wall unit at the other end allowing for symmetrically placed wall lights for ambient lighting, still leaving plenty of room for a full larder and American fridge freezer on the side wall (and room for the much loved goldfish in his tank). The island has side by side ovens, one a single fan oven, the other a combi microwave with a neat warming drawer below, these, coupled with a large gas hob above, create a modern range style cooking area without the need to find room on the worktop for a freestanding microwave. A casual seating area on the back of the island is handily positioned right next to the wine cooler, perfect when friends come over for drinks and dinner. On the other side of the kitchen is a bank of tall slim units, with open bookshelves for all the cookery books, one cupboard hiding access to essential pipework and the other a hidden access into the utility room behind. Much thought went into the design of the tiny utility space, which had to accommodate the washing machine, freezer, both electric and gas meters and still allow space for a pantry area for extra food storage.

Comfortable, beautiful, and functional – this renovation reflects a great collaboration between the owners, interior designer, and our architectural designer. This family wanted to reconfigure their first floor to create a layout that suited their lifestyle. They were working with an interior designer but found they needed a full-service firm that could properly address some structural issues. Relocating the kitchen along the entire back of the house allowed for an expanded kitchen with a large island that has seating. To open the kitchen to the deck, we removed the standard sliding door and two windows, installed a header to support a larger opening, and introduced new sliding doors that are almost 12-feet wide and 7-feet high. The clients worked with the interior designer to select a beautiful blue-gray color for perimeter the cabinets. There is a pantry cabinet to the left of the fridge, and on the right is an appliance garage on the counter with a door that flips up and back. Below the appliance garage is an extra deep pull-out drawer for additional small appliances. A quartz countertop, farm sink, and cement accent tile at the range complete the look. Wall ovens on the other side of the island. The new taller and wider sliding glass door system provides a welcome connection to the deck.

When it comes to choosing a new kitchen, some homeowners have a very specific brief. But most, like Rosario and John need a little expert guidance. ‘We knew we wanted a contemporary kitchen with modern appliances,’ Rosario explains. ‘But we didn’t know exactly what was available and whether they would suit our needs or style. In general our brief was quite simple – a new kitchen, with up-to-date appliances and a central island where we could gather with family and entertain friends.’ Having researched a number of companies, the couple were impressed by Timbercraft’s high standard of quality kitchens, the variety of designs available and the fact that all products could be customised to their specific needs. Meeting senior designer Áine O’Connor, proved the icing on the cake. ‘Áine really impressed us,’ Rosario says. ‘As well as advising us on the style of kitchen, she also told us how we could make the best use of the space available. Her ideas, including flipping the whole layout, wouldn’t have occurred to us. Yet as it turned out, it makes perfect sense! Equally, her suggestion that we remodel the dining area and create a link to the kitchen, integrating the utility room with what’s known as a ‘priest hole’ has proven absolutely brilliant. The addition of a French door and extended windows means that, with our seating area facing the garden and patio, we have beautiful views over the countryside.’
