This dining room gains it's spaciousness not just by the size, but by the pitched beam ceiling ending in solid glass doors; looking out onto the entry veranda. The chandelier is an original Isaac Maxwell from the 1960's. The custom table is made from a live edge walnut slab with polished stainless steel legs. This contemporary piece is complimented by ten old Spanish style dining chairs with brightly colored Designers Guild fabric. An 18th century hutch graces the end of the room with an antique eye of God perched on top. A rare antique Persian rug defines the floor space. The art on the walls is part of a vast collection of original art the clients have collected over the years.

Having worked on the re-design to the basement of this family home three years ago, we were thrilled to be asked to come back and look at how we could re-configure the ground floor to give this busy family more storage and entertainment space, whilst stamping the clients distinctive and elegant style on their home. We added a new kitchen island and converted underused aspects with bespoke joinery design into useful storage. By moving the dining table downstairs we created a social dining and sitting room to allow for additional guests. Beaded panelling has been added to the walls to bring character and elegance, whilst the clients innate taste has allowed her style to shine through in the furniture and fittings selected.

This is our proposal of living-room and dining-room design for a lovely family who wanted a space to relax, enjoy with family and meet with friends. A colorful and lively space which include some design objects, like the Vertigo pendant lamp and the wishbone chairs.

The dining space adjoins the kitchen not a large space by any means, so I went for a round table which works best, and can accomodate 6 if needs be. I got the table for a song on EBay - painted the base black and used the dining chairs I've had for years. Edwardian Walnut dining chairs, which I had covered years back in a very modern silver lattice work vinyl upholstery. This is super practical and fun too. I restored and recovered both of the occasional chairs to each side of the console table myself. I also lucked it finding the very narrow console table with matching marble inset top to create some interest in the room. The mirror was a give away from a client who no longer wanted it. It was gold, so I painted it black. The artwork I purchased years ago directly from the artist - as the Rose St Artist Market, in Fitzroy Melbourne. The floors right through the house have been sanded and I have used a Porters Paint product, topped with a protective polyurethane, I wanted something different to standard polished boards in this house. The calf skin adds a bit of pizazz and again I've had this for years.
