This freestanding Victorian home had been converted to an aged care hospice the Victorian design & features were lost or concealed, including the beautiful arch in the entrance hall of the home. The hallway & the 3 bedrooms at the front of the house were kept, restored & remodelled. The back of the home completely knocked down & redesigned to blend Victorian style with contemporary open plan living, an expansive kitchen & many clever storage ideas.

The back of this 1920s brick and siding Cape Cod gets a compact addition to create a new Family room, open Kitchen, Covered Entry, and Master Bedroom Suite above. European-styling of the interior was a consideration throughout the design process, as well as with the materials and finishes. La demande était d'unifier l'entrée du salon en assemblant un esprit naturel dans un style industriel. Pour cela nous avons créé un espace ouvert et confortable en associant le bois et le métal tout en rajoutant des accessoires doux et chaleureux. Une atmosphère feutrée de l'entrée au salon liée par un meuble sur mesure qui allie les deux pièces et permet de différencier le salon de la salle à manger.

A visual artist and his fiancée’s house and studio were designed with various themes in mind, such as the physical context, client needs, security, and a limited budget. Six options were analyzed during the schematic design stage to control the wind from the northeast, sunlight, light quality, cost, energy, and specific operating expenses. By using design performance tools and technologies such as Fluid Dynamics, Energy Consumption Analysis, Material Life Cycle Assessment, and Climate Analysis, sustainable strategies were identified. The building is self-sufficient and will provide the site with an aquifer recharge that does not currently exist. The main masses are distributed around a courtyard, creating a moderately open construction towards the interior and closed to the outside. The courtyard contains a Huizache tree, surrounded by a water mirror that refreshes and forms a central part of the courtyard. The house comprises three main volumes, each oriented at different angles to highlight different views for each area. The patio is the primary circulation stratagem, providing a refuge from the wind, a connection to the sky, and a night sky observatory. We aim to establish a deep relationship with the site by including the open space of the patio.

The indoor outdoor dining room links the two wings. Environmental control is achieved through a slatted timber ceiling with folding doors each end to control airflow.

The robust materiality palette expressed throughout the home - exposed concrete walls/floors, recycled bricks, aged timber, rusted metal, steel beams, glass blocks and antique finishes where cleverly and intricately detailed to magnify the celebration of assemblage but also demonstrating order within their chaotic arrangement. – DGK Architects
