This award-winning project in Tucson's Catalina Foothills has modern massings of plants, a fabulous pool for lounging and sunning and graceful steps leading down to an edible kitchen garden and a unique use of space makes this a welcoming landscape to spend time in. LED low voltage night lighting created a safe and interesting night scape!

Betz was asked to design and build a simple modern pool and patio that would be the outdoor focal point. The centrepiece is a 15’ x 30’ Gunite pool surrounded by a unique patio made up of 53 poured concrete slabs interspersed with rows of natural turf.

We were contacted by the home owner of this beautiful home in Pacific Palisades to design and install a custom pool and deck. We not only designed this amazing project but provided the turnkey construction and installation of all retaining walls, Kebony wood deck, custom built pool, plant selection, and designer furniture procurement and installation. The Contemporary Retreat....This backyard retreat was designed with therapy in mind. Dancing water for tranquility. Walk-in spa & just the right size pool to cool off or work out. Plenty of places to relax & lounge in side the pool & spa or catching rays, sun bathing. The pool view from inside adds another element that can be used all year long. An automatic pool cover makes this space easy for maintenance & adds another barrier for safety. The green lawn accents softens every turn and allows for each space to be its own destination. Outdoor dining at the outdoor kitchen is made easy with a bar side & seating for four, however plenty of space in this plan to add tables & chairs to sit and relax anywhere. The landscape designed on purpose with layers of evergreen & deciduous plantings to ensure a good look during any season. As the plants mature they will create a barrier of oneness that surrounds our clients energy, of course. A raised garden bed creates a wind block for an additional destination space the was designed for a firepit or more lounge seating. Retreat or Entertainment mecca....

View of barn from the courtyard. A rain screen of composite wood siding and corrugated metal roof are the main exterior materials. The lawn area in front of the barn supports a bocce court, seating area, ping pong and general gathering.

The pool, hot tub, patio and landscape areas were dramatically updated and modernized for this Sleepy Hollow modern hillside home. The updates feature a beautiful blue pool tile and a modern concrete patio/pool surround. I designed the concrete patio with rectangular shapes that harmoniously integrate the pool coping, providing a continuous, contemporary detail extending to the pool's edges. To add some soft touches, we incorporated several narrow accent strips within the patio, and planted them with the ground cover Elfin Thyme. A new planting bed edges the patio below the existing stone retaining wall filled with a variety of sculptural succulents, tall Kangaroo Paw plants and edged with polished black pebbles. The polished pebbles also surround the raised galvanized planters alongside the house and are used as a fire-resistant mulch in other areas. The hillside was updated with dramatic succulents and other architectural plants and ground covers, all with low water needs. This project was completed in the Spring of 2021.

What a beautiful setting for an evening outdoors in the country. On clear evenings the stars overhead will be twinkling and the lights in the valley below will flicker with a calming reassurance that this corner of the country is alive and well.

The pool was designed to act as a water feature and reflecting pool when not in use but still have the depth and size needed for a family pool.

When you need poolside seating, and sorely miss the sea...... This client knew well that I'd build a wooden boat for my family years prior, and was always up for a design/build challenge.
