The home is roughly 80 years old and had a strong character to start our design from. The home had been added onto and updated several times previously so we stripped back most of these areas in order to get back to the original house before proceeding. The addition started around the Kitchen, updating and re-organizing this space making a beautiful, simply elegant space that makes a strong statement with its barrel vault ceiling. We opened up the rest of the family living area to the kitchen and pool patio areas, making this space flow considerably better than the original house. The remainder of the house, including attic areas, was updated to be in similar character and style of the new kitchen and living areas. Additional baths were added as well as rooms for future finishing. We added a new attached garage with a covered drive that leads to rear facing garage doors. The addition spaces (including the new garage) also include a full basement underneath for future finishing – this basement connects underground to the original homes basement providing one continuous space. New balconies extend the home’s interior to the quiet, well groomed exterior. The homes additions make this project’s end result look as if it all could have been built in the 1930’s.

Sunspace Design has completed hundreds of stunning glass construction projects for clients with homes of all sizes throughout over forty years of continuous operation in New England. The project depicted here was completed for clients with a stunning 5000 square foot oceanfront residence located in York, ME. We were thrilled to be brought in on a project so close to our office headquarters! The fully custom ridge skylight project was a collaboration between Sunspace Design, CM Ragusa Builders of Seabrook, New Hampshire—who served as general contractor—and the Fiorentino Group’s architectural team out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Sunspace was brought in to offer specialty glass design-build services which included the full development and installation of the skylight. Positioned centrally in the ridged ceiling of the home’s great room, the skylight opening measures 7.5 feet by 20 feet. This generous size floods the space below with natural sunlight while providing clear views of the sky. We built and assembled the custom mahogany frame in our New Hampshire fabrication shop. After assembly, the frame was delivered directly to the site, where a crane operator and the Sunspace crew quickly affixed it to the building frame. As always, we used the very best insulated glass to ensure top thermal performance across all four seasons of northeastern weather. Copper cladding and flashing were used on the exterior (integrating with the slate roofing). The mahogany frame’s deep, rich color was matched by the building designer to complete a stunning look adjacent to the interior wood finishes. Angular and dramatic, the ridge skylight is the centerpiece of the client’s home, transforming an already beautiful space into something magical.

Living room: The existing living room felt dark and claustrophobic due to its' 2 small openings facing Northwards with a single access from a narrow landing. We sought out to bring in more natural light by creating 2 full-height large access routes that allowed an uninterrupted stream of natural light to flood in from the South elevation. This allowed the entire 4th floor to be bathed with natural light and created an effortless circulation space between the areas to make the space feel much bigger.

The flat was stripped back to the bare bones; we removed the old flooring and installed full soundproofing throughout the apartment. I then laid a dark Wenge parquet flooring and kept the walls in a light off-white paint to keep the apartment light and airy.⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠⠀ I decided to retain the original mouldings on the walls and paint the areas (walls, moulding and covings) in the same off-white colour.⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠⠀ This apartment has a timeless elegance and remains one of my favourite projects to date.

Approaching this beautiful mountain home is a feast for the eyes. The allure and stunning beauty not only comes from the minute details of the home and landscaping but from the grand vistas that encompass it. Be prepared ….the moment one steps over the threshold all perception of what a typical mountain home can be changes in an instant. A perfect explanation of what is presented is modern meets mountain. The elegant, simply unique home features a fresh approach to mountain living. Consistency and continuity are the fundamental features of this special home. Certain elements run throughout the interior; engineered wide oak flooring, white horizontal plank paneling, and gray fresh split stone adorn the walls and limestone countertops in various rooms. However, as your eye follows the quiet, clean lines they are intermittently interrupted with a dash of splash here and a pop of color there that are placed precisely in the right spots.
