We loved transforming this one-bedroom apartment in Chelsea. The list of changes was pretty long, but included rewiring, replastering, taking down the kitchen wall to make the lounge open-plan and replacing the floor throughout the apartment with beautiful hardwood. It was important for the client to have a home office desk, so we decided on an L-shape sofa to make maximum use of the space. The large pendant light added drama and a focal point to the room. And the off-white colour palette provided a subtle backdrop for the art. You'll notice that either side of the fireplace we have mirrored the wall, gives the illusion of the room being larger and also boosts the light flooding into the room.

 Designer: Deik (www.deik.co.uk) Photographer: Anna Stathaki Floral/prop stylish: Simone Bell We have also recently completed a commercial design project for Café Kitsuné in Pantechnicon (a Nordic-Japanese inspired shop, restaurant and café). Simplicity and understated luxury The property is a Grade II listed building in the Queen’s Gate Conservation area. It has been carefully refurbished to make the most out of its existing period features, with all structural elements and mechanical works untouched and preserved. The client asked for modest, understated modern luxury, and wanted to keep some of the family antique furniture. The flat has been transformed with the use of neutral, clean and simple elements that blend subtly with the architecture of the shell. Classic furniture and modern details complement and enhance one another. The focus in this project is on craftsmanship, handiwork and the use of traditional, natural, timeless materials. A mix of solid oak, stucco plaster, marble and bronze emphasize the building’s heritage. The raw stucco walls provide a simple, earthy warmth, referencing artisanal plasterwork. With its muted tones and rough-hewn simplicity, stucco is the perfect backdrop for the timeless furniture and interiors. Feature wall lights have been carefully placed to bring out the surface of the stucco, creating a dramatic feel throughout the living room and corridor. The bathroom and shower room employ subtle, minimal details, with elegant grey marble tiles and pale oak joinery creating warm, calming tones and a relaxed atmosphere.

The image presents a refined corner of a room viewed through a marble-framed archway. It features a classic white fireplace with a textured surround and a dark-painted hearth, which holds a traditional cast-iron stove. Above the mantelpiece hangs a contemporary abstract painting with bursts of color that add vibrancy to the space. To the right of the fireplace, built-in cabinetry with glass doors and brass handles provides elegant storage solutions. A small, white tabletop hosts a minimalist sculpture and a potted plant, contributing to the room’s modern aesthetic. A eucalyptus branch in a clear vase adds a touch of greenery, harmonizing with the room’s understated color scheme. The room is completed with light upholstered chairs that feature a textured fabric, and their brass legs complement the cabinetry’s hardware. The herringbone wooden floor continues the theme of subtle elegance. This space exemplifies a sophisticated blend of traditional elements and modern artistry, creating an atmosphere that is both welcoming and stylish.

I was honored to work with these homeowners again, now to fully furnish this new magnificent architectural marvel made especially for them by Lake Flato Architects. Creating custom furnishings for this entire home is a project that spanned over a year in careful planning, designing and sourcing while the home was being built and then installing soon thereafter. I embarked on this design challenge with three clear goals in mind. First, create a complete furnished environment that complimented not competed with the architecture. Second, elevate the client’s quality of life by providing beautiful, finely-made, comfortable, easy-care furnishings. Third, provide a visually stunning aesthetic that is minimalist, well-edited, natural, luxurious and certainly one of kind. Ultimately, I feel we succeeded in creating a visual symphony accompaniment to the architecture of this room, enhancing the warmth and livability of the space while keeping high design as the principal focus.
