In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth. Small San Francisco Landscape Remodel

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period. To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete (cast concrete) pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. コンテンポラリースタイルの庭をデザインする

雅な雰囲気の日本庭園、ニースの風を感じる南欧風のガーデン、バラが咲き誇るイングリッシュガーデン、ウッドデッキに青々とした芝生のコンビネーションなど、一言で“庭”と言ってもさまざまなガーデニングレイアウトがあり、それぞれの庭デザインによって印象や手入れがまったく異なります。もし狭小の庭であれば、思い切って日本庭園風に寄せてしまうのが正解。なぜなら、日本庭園は構成要素が少なく、余白を美とするのが特長。狭くても世界観を表現することが可能だからです。全体に低い植物や置物で統一することで目線を低く抑え、広く見せることができます。日本家屋でなくても、意外と合う日本風の庭園。家の建て替えや新築の際には検討してみてはいかがでしょうか。

洋風の庭でガーデニング

きちんと手入れされた芝生に、咲き乱れる季節の花。ゆったりと腰掛けられるベンチや噴水のある洋風の庭は誰しもがあこがれるスペースです。植木の周りを囲うレンガや、植木鉢やプランターをおしゃれに見せるアイアン製の装飾や、木のベンチやスツール、陶器の置物なども、庭の雰囲気を一気にグレードアップさせます。いずれも風雨にさらされると劣化を早めますし、台風や竜巻などが来るとあらかじめわかっているときには、防災面からも早めに屋内へ引き上げたほうがよいでしょう。汚れていたり、壊れていたりすると嫌でも目についてしまうのが庭。いくら部屋をきれいにしても庭がそうでないと興ざめしてしまいます。“ほら！自慢の庭を見て！”と言わんばかりに、常に美しく保っておきたいですね。

庭の通路の芝の手入れの方法は？

『隣の芝生は青い』ということわざ、実は英語でもあります（『The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.』）。それくらい馴染みがあり羨望の象徴となっている芝生は、とても手がかかる植物です。手入れを怠るとすぐに雑草が伸びたり、芝がはげたり……。日当たりや排水などの環境のほか、日ごろから少しずつ手入れをしたり、管理が重要となります。手入れの基本は芝刈り、水やり、除草、肥料の4つ。四季がはっきりしている日本では、その時季に応じた手入れの方法や、葉腐病などの病気や害虫の対策もしなければなりません。まさに青い芝生は一日でならずなのです。
