The existing garden layout was very unwelcoming, with a lot of overgrown shrubs and dense foliage that resembled a long dark tunnel. The clients really wanted the space to work more practically for them as a family, and to encourage the children to venture and explore outdoors. Due to the steep slope the design and build involved some major excavation to allow a bigger patio space that was in balance with the house. It was also important that there was a gentle meandering journey up through the garden, allowing places to stop and pause, to entice you towards the upper lawn and a new woodland area where there is an outdoor studio, play area and gym. The slope itself acts as a wonderful stage set to showcase the garden. The poured concrete retaining walls, hardwood timber and Corten steel all weather very naturally, which combined with the soft, undulating rhythm and repetition of the planting, has resulted in a soothing and restful composition. The clients are out in the garden everyday come rain or shine, enjoying the space. They have been a complete joy to work with, embracing every aspect of a challenging build, and the results that can be reaped.

John Glover A classical family garden based in Essex surrounding a beautiful Grade 2 Listed property which has been lovingly renovated over the last couple of years. This sociable family, with busy professional lives, invited Aralia to do a complete overhaul on their rural country garden approaching around 1 acre in total. The country garden was split into several garden sections including: Southern Terrace & Orchard Gardens, Rose Garden (to the front of the property), Zen Garden (central garden courtyard), pedestrian entrance front garden, driveway and further lawned gardens including vegetable garden. The southern terrace and Orchard Gardens benefitted from a beautiful existing walled garden area which has been enhanced and complemented with many beautiful features including: large 3m outdoor fireplace using natural stone paddle-stones; a row of magnificent Pleached Trees (Ilex quercus), curved natural sandstone sawn paving with setts and borders crammed with a beautiful array of sculptural buxus spheres and herbaceous planting. The Zen garden is an area for quiet contemplation, and includes Acers and Buxus balls, with a real Japanese slant to the planting scheme – offset by a beautiful central metal sculpture. A mature Photinia Red Robin hedge was installed along the new driveway to provide privacy to the Orchard Garden. Aralia provided a full Landscape Design & Build service, working with a multi-functional team of sub-contractors. They work in extensively in London & The South East (including Hertfordshire & Essex) but work across the Uk & Internationally.

A tight outdoor space was transformed into a natural backyard oasis. The multi-tiered deck leads onto a natural flagstone pathway with paver edging. The path opens into a circular fire pit tucked into the edge of the garden, enclosed with purple-leafed redbud trees and anchored with a mature fig tree. Dry stacked stone creates the curved bench, which also retains the elevated garden bed that wraps the fire circle. The natural cedar fence encloses the space and the custom gate becomes a garden feature of its own with a stained glass window.

The upper terrace is a vantage point that invites visitors from one level to another and offers views of the landscape, its scale and depth of botanical plantings.
