Living Gardens Landscape Design
Our clients were looking to replace their existing dying grass with a welcoming low water design. We created a fire pit seating area under trees with string lights overhead. The fountain is featured opposite the master bedroom windows. A low water and low maintenance design.

A japanese garden created in combination with a herb and vegetable garden contained in weathered Cor-ten steel tanks. The dry river bed was created using recycled mild steel pieces and naturally arranged river stones. The water feature was designed in unison with Yael K Designs.
London Garden Designer
The clients of this Highgate Garden contacted London Garden Designer in Dec 2011, after seeing some of my work in House and Garden Magazine. They had recently moved into the house and were keen to have the garden ready for summer. The brief was fairly open, although one specific request was for a Garden Lodge to be used as a Gym and art room. This was something that would require planning permission so I set this in motion whilst I got on with designing the rest of the garden. The ground floor of the house opened out onto a deck that was one metre from the lawn level, and felt quite exposed to the surrounding neighbours. The garden also sloped across its width by about 1.5 m, so I needed to incorporate this into the design.

This property in the heart of Hampstead has stunning views due to its elevated position. The clients were keen to maximise this and ensure that the garden and roof top skyline remained visible from the ground floor.
A steep slope at the rear created a dangerous fall that was fenced off for safety, and some very oppressive overgrown conifers cast heavy shade across the garden.
Permission was obtained to remove the conifers and the light flooded in. To ensure continued privacy from the neighbours’ raised adjoining terraces, we planted a row of pleached X Sycoparrotia semidecidua, an unusual variety of semi evergreen tree with attractive early flowers.
A decent size lawn area was retained around the central ornamental cherry tree, and a 3 metre deep, herbaceous borders span the full width of the garden, creating a diaphanous backdrop above which skyline is visible.
A full height glass window vertically spans the 4-storey house, creating a strong visual link with the garden from each floor. We echoed this feature by creating a mirror image of the tall window across the patio and lawn, using lines of hardwood deck and full width stone treads through the lawn, culminating in a water feature suspended above the steep rear slope. A cantilevered deck off sets this and provides an outdoor lounge area to capture the setting sun over the Hampstead horizon.

THE LEMON TREE TRUST GARDEN
A garden inspired by the resilience, determination and ingenuity of refugees living in Domiz camp in Northern Iraq, was unveiled at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Lemon Tree Trust garden, designed with the input of refugees, highlighted the unexpected beauty hidden in the camp. The garden was designed to be used as a space to begin to organise the chaos inherent in forced migration, while also providing a sense of normality, wellbeing, peace and civility to broken lives.
Beautiful yet drought tolerant planting educated visitors about the type of plants refugees grow in the camp. Ingenious vertical planting, inspired by refugees’ use of everyday objects, and including input from refugees themselves, provided ideas for planting in limited spaces. Trees laden with fruit, including figs, lemons and pomegranates, provided scent and crops to harvest. Brutal, harsh materials, such as concrete and steel, widely available in the camps, were elevated with techniques such as polishing, casting and crafting into patterns and intricate Islamic inspired designs. Colourful and textural planting softened the hard materials. Cooling and calming water flowed throughout the space, collected in channels and pools, recycled and pumped back through the brimming central Islamic inspired fountain, representing the importance of grey water reuse and the many makeshift fountains refugees have built in their own gardens in Domiz camp.
Tom Massey progressed to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with a 10x13m Main Avenue garden, after two successful show gardens at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden was built by award winning contractor Landscape Associates and was awarded an RHS Silver-Gilt medal.
