While the homeowners' choice to build their new ultra-insulated passive house on an urban infill lot made sense on many levels, it also led to some major challenges. A massive basalt outcrop dominated the site, resulting in the lot remaining vacant for decades as the neighborhood grew around it. The architect sited the home on top of the outcrop with retaining walls around the home to create a flat plane to build on. Even pushing the limits this way resulted in limited outdoor space, but the intimate courtyard areas provide make the most of what's available. A double-fall poured-concrete water feature is paired with a linear fire pit to create a dynamic statement in the main courtyard. It is visible from the main living areas and the master bedroom for year-round enjoyment. The upper basin is integrated into the basalt rock wall, with basalt columns forming part of the surround.

Treated softwood sleepers are used to create terraced levels. An inexpensive material and easy to use, they also create a very soft effect. The return details around the steps take this design up a level from just simple straight lines.

The natural basalt retaining walls create a sheer drop along one side of the house, so decorative metal screens alternate with vertical continuations of the basalt wall.

Yarrow and asters attract butterflies to this sunny California garden. I was invited to do the planting design for this compact hillside project after the hardscape was complete. The home is situated on a corner lot, and a number of very narrow beds and stepped planting arrows wrap the house in a "C" shape. Sandstone setts are used to create a simple line, emphasising the route up the steps to the top of the garden. By just using single edging lines the cost is greatly reduced and the path becomes a less emphatic feature.

雅な雰囲気の日本庭園、ニースの風を感じる南欧風のガーデン、バラが咲き誇るイングリッシュガーデン、ウッドデッキに青々とした芝生のコンビネーションなど、一言で“庭”と言ってもさまざまなガーデニングレイアウトがあり、それぞれの庭デザインによって印象や手入れがまったく異なります。もし狭小の庭であれば、思い切って日本庭園風に寄せてしまうのが正解。なぜなら、日本庭園は構成要素が少なく、余白を美とするのが特長。狭くても世界観を表現することが可能だからです。全体に低い植物や置物で統一することで目線を低く抑え、広く見せることができます。日本家屋でなくても、意外と合う日本風の庭園。家の建て替えや新築の際には検討してみてはいかがでしょうか。

洋風の庭でガーデニング

きちんと手入れされた芝生に、咲き乱れる季節の花。ゆったりと腰掛けられるベンチや噴水のある洋風の庭は誰しもがあこがれるスペースです。植木の周りを囲うレンガや、植木鉢やプランターをおしゃれに見せるアイアン製の装飾や、木のベンチやスツール、陶器の置物なども、庭の雰囲気を一気にグレードアップさせます。いずれも風雨にさらされると劣化を早めますし、台風や竜巻などが来るとあらかじめわかっているときには、防災面からも早めに屋内へ引き上げたほうがよいでしょう。汚れていたり、壊れていたりすると嫌でも目についてしまうのが庭。いくら部屋をきれいにしても庭がそうでないと興ざめしてしまいます。“ほら！自慢の庭を見て！”と言わんばかりに、常に美しく保っておきたいですね。

庭の芝の手入れの方法は？

『隣の芝生は青い』ということわざ、実は英語でもあります（『The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.』）。それくらい馴染みがあり羨望の象徴となっている芝生は、とても手がかかる植物です。手入れを怠るとすぐに雑草が伸びたり、芝がはげたり……。日当たりや排水などの環境のほか、日ごろから少しずつ手入れをしたり、管理が重要となります。手入れの基本は芝刈り、水やり、除草、肥料の4つ。四季がはっきりしている日本では、その時季に応じた手入れの方法や、葉腐病などの病気や害虫の対策もしなければなりません。まさに青い芝生は一日でならずなのです。
