The property had quite a large front drive & the client wanted to create a private front garden. We removed the deciduous hedge planting and replanted evergreen hedging, giving a much smarter look. The front drive was reduced by half and divided with a tall yew hedge, slatted cedar fencing and bamboo screening.

NORWOOD | FRONT GARDEN Breath of fresh air | Slick upgrade for front garden Front Garden Areas Our client brief was to give their tired ‘old’ garden a complete makeover. A new driveway to replace the old red brick drive, create a garden out of an unused passageway style lifeless garden. We guided our clients to embrace a new fresh look whilst looking back to the heritage style for design detail and quirky interest. The new driveway is polished concrete with strips of bluestone cobbles which link the new bluestone pathway to the front door. The cobble feature harks back to the 1900’s brickwork on the northern side wall. Here there are small feature bricks running parallel with the ‘old reds’ giving the wall visual interest and a quirky detail. A new front fence with a little more height for balance to the gable. The entrance entices visitors through a generous gate to polished concrete steppers planted with dwarf mondo grass. Newly painted driveway fence planted with Star Jasmine to create a green wall along the northern fence line. New lawn and garden beds cool the western garden areas incorporating classic modern garden design and lighting. There is an excellent balance between soft and hard landscaping. The raised beds have a floating slatted fence and the planting scheme is different inside and out, grasses, Gaura and seasonal edible plants against a vibrant blue wall inside and a variety of lavenders outside.

These new garden areas were part of an extensive shift and change for this 1800’s villa. The architect linked two old semi’s together creating a new family home in this heritage area of Norwood. We designed 4 garden zones on a very small footprint. The first was the front garden which was designed with a soft feel in mind. We chose plants that would complement the style and architecture of the home giving it a softer feel upon entry. We chose large format pavers with a breakout area for departing family and friends. A large shade tree and colours that complemented the bluestone facade and lilac coloured front door. The second garden was a private courtyard adjacent the front garden behind a high picket fence. This is where clients can be brought into the private studio. Natural light in abundance we sought to create a lush green courtyard by using ‘green screens’, soft colours and textural ground covers. The third garden was on the northern side of the home within the entertaining area. We installed a very large Cercis canadensis ‘Merlot’ (Forest Pansy) for shade, green screens and textural planting for visual interest. And finally the back garden was designed for garage access, utility area access and for the clients two large dogs. We combined a selection of plants that were hardy enough to cope with playful pups, and would contribute to the clients love of fresh produce. Espaliered olive, pomegranate and pear were installed as was the clients lemon tree with herbs dotted throughout the garden.

Completing the Vibe...Cool & Contemporary Curb Appeal that helps complete our clients special spaces. From the start...it feels like it was here all along. The perimeter tree line serving as a partial wind break has a feel that most parks long for. Lit up at night, it almost feels like youre in a downtown urban park. Forever Lawn grass brightens the front lawn without all the maintenance. Full accessibility with custom concrete rocksalt deck pads makes it easy for everyone to get around. Accent lighting adds to the environments ambiance positioned for safety and athletics. Natural limestone & mossrock boulders engraves the terrain, softening the energy & movement. We bring all the colors together on a custom cedar fence that adds privacy & function. Moving into the backyard, steps pads, ipe deck & forever lawn adds depth and comfort making spaces to slow down and admire your moments in the landscaped edges.

With the clients having already cleared most of the site, this front garden offered a blank canvas for designing a planting scheme. Ensuring the site was free of weeds, the soil was improved with organic matter so planting could get off to a good start. A combination of shrubs and perennials were supplemented by a range of bulbs, offering additional interest throughout the year in a small space. A colour scheme of violet blue and orange-yellow was selected, opposites on the colour wheel, but giving a vibrancy to the planting, whilst dark tones were added to give a richness. The clients were novice gardeners so were looking for low maintenance and easy care plants whilst learning new skills and a developing passion for plants. Two contemporary galvanised zinc planers in a zingy shade of teal were added to extend the areas of planting outside the front door and the existing driveway. They also added a much-needed shot of colour through the winter months. Foliage had contrasting textures with plants such as Bergenia and Hydrangea quercifolia showing vibrant colour changes in leaf as the temperatures start to drop. Varieties of plant were selected for their compact size so they would not require constant pruning and would sit well in their allotted space.

The client expanded their living area by returning this area to garden as the drive already fits 2 cars plus the garage. By adding French doors they have significantly increased the sense of space indoors as well as effectively adding a new outdoor room. It has become a firm favourite as it is a total sun trap.
