This property has a wonderful juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements, which are unified by a natural planting scheme. Although the house is traditional, the client desired some contemporary elements, enabling us to introduce rusted steel fences and arbors, black granite for the barbeque counter, and black African slate for the main terrace. An existing brick retaining wall was saved and forms the backdrop for a long fountain with two stone water sources. Almost an acre in size, the property has several destinations. A winding set of steps takes the visitor up the hill to a redwood hot tub, set in a deck amongst walls and stone pillars, overlooking the property. Another winding path takes the visitor to the arbor at the end of the property, furnished with Emu chaises, with relaxing views back to the house, and easy access to the adjacent vegetable garden. Urban Elements Landscapes

The aptly named project “ The Rise”, presented some design and construction challenges due to the steepness of the site. A highly detailed plan allowed UEL to facilitate a magnificent finished project, much to the satisfaction of our client. The project entailed detailed concrete subbases to facilitate natural stone surfaces, with great consideration to retaining of the sloped ground through a series of natural timber terraced retaining walls. Much thought was also put into drainage on the site, to prevent ongoing issues with natural water movement. The soil preparation and extensive plant list provides the clients with a garden that will satisfy their love of horticulture for years to come.

きちんと手入れされた芝生に、咲き乱れる季節の花。ゆったりと腰掛けられるベンチや噴水のある洋風の庭は誰しもがあこがれるスペースです。植木の周りを囲うレンガや、植木鉢やプランターをおしゃれに見せるアイアン製の装飾や、木のベンチやスツール、陶器の置物なども、庭の雰囲気を一気にグレードアップさせます。いずれも風雨にさらされると劣化を早めますし、台風や竜巻などが来るとあらかじめわかっているときには、防災面からも早めに屋内へ引き上げたほうがよいでしょう。汚れていたり、壊れていたりすると嫌でも目についてしまうのが庭。いくら部屋をきれいにしても庭がそうでないと興ざめしてしまいます。“ほら！自慢の庭を見て！”と言わんばかりに、常に美しく保っておきたいですね。

裏庭の芝の手入れの方法は？

『隣の芝生は青い』ということわざ、実は英語でもあります（『The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.』）。それくらい馴染みがあり羨望の象徴となっている芝生は、とても手がかかる植物です。手入れを怠るとすぐに雑草が伸びたり、芝がはげたり……。日当たりや排水などの環境のほか、日ごろから少しずつ手入れをしたり、管理が重要となります。手入れの基本は芝刈り、水やり、除草、肥料の4つ。四季がはっきりしている日本では、その時季に応じた手入れの方法や、葉腐病などの病気や害虫の対策もしなければなりません。まさに青い芝生は一日でならずなのです。
