Photos via: Jellis Craig Eltham This kitchen renovation transformed our client's Warrandyte home into a modern/industrial space - beautifully complimenting the owner's existing decorating tastes. Our design brief included functionality for the family, kitchen-to-living accessibility and guest entertaining whilst also conveying the owners personal style. In collaboration with our client, we decided to use stainless steel bench tops with a waterfall end. This is featured at the end of the sink and cooktop run and also seen visually cutting through the front of the lightwood island. Being an abstract design, the use of symmetry was essential. This is seen with the dual waterfall ends, but also with the white cabinet creating a mirrored "L" shape to the lightwood wall oven tower and under bench cabinets. Complete with black tapware, black feature light, stainless steel stools and subway tile splashback, this design is definitely one to bookmark.

The dark tones of the kitchen and floor with the full glass wall works beautifully to accentuate the contrast between light and dark. This creates a beautiful room that transforms as the day turns into night.

Contemporary artist Gustav Klimpt’s “The Kiss” was the inspiration for this 1950’s ranch remodel. The existing living room, dining, kitchen and family room were independent rooms completely separate from each other. Our goal was to create an open grand-room design to accommodate the needs of a couple who love to entertain on a large scale and whose parties revolve around theater and the latest in gourmet cuisine. The kitchen was moved to the end wall so that it became the “stage” for all of the client’s entertaining and daily life’s “productions”. The custom tile mosaic, both at the fireplace and kitchen, inspired by Klimpt, took first place as the focal point. Because of this, we chose the Best by Broan K4236SS for its minimal design, power to vent the 30” Wolf Cooktop and that it offered a seamless flue for the 10’6” high ceiling. The client enjoys the convenient controls and halogen lighting system that the hood offers and cleaning the professional baffle filter system is a breeze since they fit right in the Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen's sink area let's the cook talk with his guests. The stainless steel sink is fully integrated with the counter. A higher counter of butcher block is at the end for rolling pasta and cutting cookies. KR+H's Karla Monkevich designed the glass shelving that's framed in the same machine age aesthetic as the other metal components in the kitchen. Our customer wanted large, deep drawers to hold lots of things so top quality, heavy-duty hardware was used and moveable dividers were integrated into the drawers for easy re-organization. A 90mm thick Elm veneer bartop creates a casual seating arrangement, perfect for enjoying a coffee or sitting to talk with the cook whist they are hard at work. The Kaolin laminate fronts are edged with aluminium, which high lights the geometric forms and precise lines of the cabinetry.

Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the low-slung Gainsburg House in 1946 in the spirit of his father’s Usonian House prototypes of the 1930s. The new owners sought to reverse years of insensitive alterations while including a new kitchen, dining and family rooms, updated bathrooms, lighting and finishes, with accommodation for contemporary art display. The house was conceived as one area within an overall site geometry and the exterior can be seen from all interior angles and spaces. Our new palette compliments the original finishes and reinforces the existing geometry, enhancing a rhythm that moves throughout the house and engages the landscape in a continuous spatial composition.
