This inviting 850 sqft ADU in Sacramento checks all the boxes for beauty and function! Warm wood finishes on the flooring, hickory open shelves, and ceiling timbers float on a neutral paint palette of soft whites and tans. Black elements on the cabinetry, interior doors, furniture elements, and decorative lighting act as the “little black dress” of the room. The hand applied plaster-style finish on the fireplace in a charcoal tone provide texture and interest to this focal point of the great room space. The kitchen takes the place of the original living room however the floor is dropped three steps - effectively raising the ceiling height. We worked with the original window location, using it as a datum level for custom open framed timber shelving to house the rangehood. A neutral pallete o soft oyster grey, brass, ceasarstone fresh concrete & vicorian ash has a calming effect.

What does a designer do if you have client who loves color, loves mid-century, loves to cook and has a busy home life.....MAKE AN AMAZING KITCHEN~ Featuring Signature Custom Cabinetry in 4 colors, doors with mirror inserts, doors with metal union jack inserts, walnut trim, shelves, and wood top, custom color Blue Star french door ovens and custom Heath oval tile~ To add a little extra geometry to the floors, we took a standard 24" square tile and cut half of them into triangles and designed the floor to show the additional texture!

Garage, kitchen, dining and living spaces are grouped within one wing of the home, with bedrooms, bathrooms and family room in the other. Our overall design concept for the renovation of this space was to optimize the functional space for a family of five and accentuate the existing window. In the renovation, we eliminated a huge centrally located kitchen island which acted as an obstacle to the feeling of the space and focused on creating an elegant and balanced plan promoting movement, simplicity and precisely executed details. We held strong to having the kitchen cabinets, wherever possible, float off the floor to give the subtle impression of lightness avoiding a bottom heavy look. The cabinets were painted a pale tinted green to reduce the empty effect of light flooding a white kitchen leaving a softness and complementing the gray tiles. To integrate the existing dining room with the kitchen, we simply added some classic dining chairs and a dynamic light fixture, juxtaposing the geometry of the boxy kitchen with organic curves and triangular lights to balance the clean design with an inviting warmth.

This prefabricated 1,800 square foot Certified Passive House is designed and built by The Artisans Group, located in the rugged central highlands of Shaw Island, in the San Juan Islands. It is the first Certified Passive House in the San Juans, and the fourth in Washington State. The home was built for $330 per square foot, while construction costs for residential projects in the San Juan market often exceed $600 per square foot. Passive House measures did not increase this projects’ cost of construction. The clients are retired teachers, and desired a low-maintenance, cost-effective, energy-efficient house in which they could age in place; a restful shelter from clutter, stress and over-stimulation. The circular floor plan centers on the prefabricated pod. Radiating from the pod, cabinetry and a minimum of walls defines functions, with a series of sliding and concealable doors providing flexible privacy to the peripheral spaces. The interior palette consists of wind fallen light maple floors, locally made FSC certified cabinets, stainless steel hardware and neutral tiles in black, gray and white. The exterior materials are painted concrete fiberboard lap siding, Ipe wood slats and galvanized metal. The home sits in stunning contrast to its natural environment with no formal landscaping.
