In designing the new layout for the kitchen, we decided to remove the pantry closet and expand into the former eat-in area. This gave us the opportunity to create a beautifully functional island with plenty of seating and prep space for multiple cooks in the kitchen. We were all still in love with the walnut flooring we installed during the first phase of this project and opted to lean into the classic tones and bring them into the cabinetry scheme. To balance all those gorgeous warm grains, we cooled the space down with a spunky hand painted tile that enlivens the space.

This kitchen features full overlay frameless cabinets in the Metro door style from Eclipse Cabinetry by Shiloh in Pearl White Melamine. This inviting 850 sqft ADU in Sacramento checks all the boxes for beauty and function! Warm wood finishes on the flooring, hickory open shelves, and ceiling timbers float on a neutral paint palette of soft whites and tans. Black elements on the cabinetry, interior doors, furniture elements, and decorative lighting act as the “little black dress” of the room. The hand applied plaster-style finish on the fireplace in a charcoal tone provide texture and interest to this focal point of the great room space. With large sliding doors overlooking the backyard and pool this ADU is the perfect oasis with all the conveniences of home!

The Kitchen exemplifies the idea of creating a medley of Eastern and Western influences brought together by contemporary design. A subdued color palette, rich in texture variety, give this kitchen its character. The range hood clad in black Venetian Plaster, takes its inspiration from ideas expounded by the traditional Japanese aesthetic principals of wabi sabi, which values transience and imperfection.

The tiny kitchen needed expansion, and because of the deep lot, we were able to extend the entire rear of the home, enlarging the kitchen and adding a walk-in pantry, 1/2 bath, mudroom, master bedroom, and master bath. An infusion of natural light finished it off nicely. Photography by Adam Gibson

When my clients purchased this charming 1940's home in the Seattle neighborhood of Wedgwood, they were amazed by how intact the original kitchen was. It was like a perfect time capsule. The color palette was avocado green and buttercream yellow. The highlights were an original retro built-in banquette and vintage oven! The challenge we faced (besides the awesome but dated finishes) was the closed floor plan typical in this era of homes and the lack of storage. So, we opened the kitchen to the adjacent dining and living room, bringing it up to speed with modern-day living. In opening it up, we also walled off a doorway that went from the kitchen to the hallway, but it was completely unnecessary and allowed us to gain an entire wall of cabinets that didn't exist previously. For the finishes, we kept it classic with mostly gray and white but brought in a little flare and interest with the herringbone backsplash and brushed brass finishes because who doesn't love a little gold? Also, we added color with the finishing details like the rug and countertop decor because those things are a great way to add interest and warmth to a space and can be easily changed when it's time for a fresh new look. --- Project designed by interior design studio Kimberlee Marie Interiors. In this middle size town house the kitchen is a very important, central place and it had undergone a full structural remodel. The client had requested a neutral color palette with subdued natural tones. The designer had used two level counter tops to give a hint of separation between kitchen and dining areas but consistency in material gave it a united look.
