Designed by Fabio Fantolino, Lagrange House is located in the heart of the city of Turin. Two apartments in one inhabited by mother and son, perceived as a single space that may be divided allowing each to preserve a sense of individual personality and independence. The internal design is inspired by the styles of the 1950’s and 1970’s, each a contamination of the other. The hand-sanded Hungarian oak herringbone flooring sets the scene forthe entire project. Some items are found in both apartments: the handles, the round table in the dining area. The mother resides in the larger apartment, which is elegant and sophisticated thanks to the richness of the materials used, the marble, the fabric and the highly polished steel features. The flavour of the 1950s finds its greatest expression in the living area which, apart from its elegance offers different areas of expression. The conversation area is developed around a Minotti Freeman Tailor sofa, featuring a rigorous cotton titanium-coloured fabric and a double-stitched linearmotif, typical of the 1950's, contrasting with soft elements such as carpets, De La Cuona pale pink velvet-covered armchairs with Bowl by Mater tables at their sides. The study area has a walnut desk, softened by the light from an Aballs T by Parachilna suspension Lamp. The Calacatta gold marble table surrounded by dark velvet Verpan chairs with a black structure is in the centre of the dining area, illuminated by the warm light from a black Tango lamp from the Phanto collection. The setting is completed by two parallel niches and a black burnished iron archway: a glass showcase for dishes and an opening allowing for a glimpse of the kitchen in black fenix with shelving in American walnut enriched with Calacatta gold marble interspersed by TopanVP6 coloured pendants by &Tradition. The guest bathroom maximizes the richness of Arabescato marble used as a vertical lining which contrasts with the aquamarine door of the washbasin cabinet with circular walnut particulars. The upstairs sleeping area is conceived as a haven, an intimate place between the delicacy of light grey wood panelling, a Phanto PawFloor lamp and a Verner Panton black flowerpot bedside lamp. To further define this atmosphere, the Gubi Beetle Chair seat with a black structure and velvet lining and the table lamp designed by the architect Fabio Fantolino. The smaller apartment has a design closer to the '70s. The loung has a more contemporary and informal air, a Percival Lafer vintage leather armchair, a petrol-coloured Gianfranco Frattini for Tacchini sofa and light alcantara chrome-plated tubular chairs. The kitchen can be closed-in on itself, serving as a background to the dining area. The guest bathroom has dark tones in red Levanto marble with details in black and chromed iron. The sleeping area features a blue velvet headboard and a corner white panelling in the corner that houses a wall cabinet, bedside table and custom made lamp. The bond between the two home owners and, consequently, between the two apartments is underlined by the seamlessly laid floor and airs details that represent a unique design that adapts and models the personality of the individual, revisiting different historical eras that are exalted by the use of contemporary design icons.

Le richieste di Francesco per la sua cucina non erano molte. In pratica voleva un tavolo da pranzo per ospitare 2/4 persone, un frigo e congelatore capienti, lo spazio per la tv. E doveva avere il piano a induzione perché l'appartamento è di nuova costruzione. Prima di proporgli una soluzione di arredo, mi sono riservata del tempo con Francesco per capire cosa abitualmente fa e cosa si aspetta di poter fare in una cucina. Ho approfondito le sue esigenze attuali e mi sono fatta un'idea delle sue necessità future. Ed ho capito che, senza verbalizzarle, Francesco aveva bisogno di molto altro. Aveva bisogno di molto spazio contenitivo e di tanta illuminazione; la cucina doveva essere facile da pulire e fatta di materiale resistente, soprattutto il piano di lavoro doveva assolutamente essere di facile manutenzione. Siccome è un ragazzo giovane e con gusti moderni, il forno doveva essere assolutamente alto e il materiale di lavello e rubinetti doveva essere adatto ad un uso "senza troppe cerimonie" e, aggiungo io, in nuance con il top e i colori di basi e pensili. Infine, aveva assolutamente bisogno di uno spazio che fungesse da sgabuzzino per mettere i prodotti della pulizia e l'aspirapolvere. Lo spazio di questa cucina rettangolare, con due ante a battente come finestra, è ampio. Gli ho proposto una cucina bicolor, con basi di qualche tonalità più scura rispetto ai pensili. Piano di lavoro in materiale super resistente multicolor ma con tutte le tonalità presenti in cucina. Lavello e rubinetto in nuance, anch'essi in materiale resistente e facile da pulire. Luci sottopensili per tutta la lunghezza e cappa a scomparsa. Ampi cesti scorrevoli molto contenitivi, anche nelle basi ad angolo. Doppia colonna per forno, frigorifero con congelatore e spazio ad uno "sgabuzzino" per aspirapolvere e prodotti pulizia. Sotto al lavello, ampio e comodo spazio per la raccolta differenziata. L'illuminazione è completata da un lampadario originalissimo con più punti luce direzionati verso lo spazio tecnico e verso il tavolo da pranzo. Il tavolo da pranzo è allungabile mediante un meccanismo semplice e funzionale. Completano l'arredo le 4 sedie in materiale leggero e resistente, bicolor, abbinate a coppia. AL posto del rivestimento verticale in classiche piastrelle, ho optato per una pittura super lavabile di una tonalità di verde, con sfumature metalliche/iridescenti, protetta da vernice idonea al locale, che dona all'ambiente calore e particolarità, oltre ad essere in nuance con i colori presenti nel living adiacente.

Admittedly, the upper cabinets are gloss white, but there are two additional cabinet materials that create a rich combination of color and texture. The bases and back of the island are high-gloss dark teak-patterned laminate that echo the dark tongue-and-groove wood ceiling. The tall cabinets, fridge panels, and front and sides of the island are a soft matte gray-toned rift cut patterned laminate. For a clean profile, the white cabinets use touch latches, while the gray and dark doors employ aluminum channel pulls that add a low-sheen metallic accent. Tying everything together is the gray and taupe marble countertops with matching slab backsplashes. The subtly mottled limestone-like porcelain tile flooring is the perfect backdrop for the room’s lively mix. Anchored by the homeowner’s 42-foot-long painting, the interiors of this Palm Springs residence were designed to showcase the owner’s art collection, and create functional spaces for daily living that can be easily adapted for large social gatherings. Referencing the environment and architecture in both form and material, the finishes and custom furnishings bring the interior to life. Alluding to the roofs that suspend over the building, the sofas seem to hover above the carpets while the knife-edge table top appears to float above a metal base. Bleached and cerused wood mimic the “desert effect” that would naturally occur in this environment, while the textiles on the sofa are the same shade as the rocks of the landscape. Monolithic concrete floors connect all of the spaces while concealing mechanical systems, and stone thresholds signal vertical level changes and exterior transitions. Large wall masses provide the optimal backdrop for the homeowner’s oversized art. The wall structures ground the interior, while the opposing expanses of glass frame the desert views. The location and use of operable doors and windows allows the house to naturally ventilate, reducing cooling loads. The furnishings create spaces in an architectural fashion. Designed and fabricated for flexibility, the pieces easily accommodate the owners’ large social gatherings. The dining table can be split into two and the sofas can be pushed out along the walls, opening the center of the space to entertain. The design of the interior spaces and furnishings seamlessly integrates the setting, architecture, artwork and spaces into a cohesive whole.

Our Moss Building & Design client has a beautiful home in desirable Oak Hill, Virginia that had, when purchased, the original builder’s grade kitchen and its related elements, all in need of updates. Our client had a very specific vision for the kitchen remodel, hoping to transform it to match the “urban loft style” of the rest of the home. With an eye to a modern and almost minimalist design, the goal of the Moss Building & Design team was to bring the client’s vision to a reality - utilizing specific focus on clean lines, a focus on eclectic and unique fixtures, and a stunning use of quartz on both the massive island and the walls, among others. The end result was that the newly remodeled kitchen is beautiful in its uniqueness but also retains a natural flow from the rest of the home.
