Quite often, homeowners neglect or don’t consider landscaping for the side of their homes. This photo shows how you can create a stunning look in even the smallest of spaces. The owners of this Spicewood, TX home, chose a path of river rocks leading from the privacy gate to the back yard. We laid the pebbles in a gently curving pattern to resemble a flowing river. This look was further enhanced with the addition of black soil at the sides. The camouflage looking pavers not only add another layer of visual appeal, but they also have a practical function as they provide a stable surface to walk on.

New zoning codes paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit in this homes Minneapolis location. This new unit allows for independent multi-generational housing within close proximity to a primary residence and serves visiting family, friends, and an occasional Airbnb renter. The strategic use of glass, partitions, and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy interior while keeping the square footage below 400 square feet. Vertical siding and awning windows create a fresh, yet complementary addition. Christopher Strom was recognized in the “Best Contemporary” category in Marvin Architects Challenge 2017. The judges admired the simple addition that is reminiscent of the traditional red barn, yet uses strategic volume and glass to create a dramatic contemporary living space.

Fresh new siding throughout, and an added wood detail to bring on some charm and visually unite the deck with the home.

A contemporary duplex that has all of the contemporary trappings of glass panel garage doors and clean lines, but fits in with more traditional architecture on the block. Each unit has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths as well as its own private pool.

Interior Designer: Vision Interiors by Visbeen Builder: Joel Peterson Homes Photographer: Ashley Avila Photography As a conceptual urban infill project, the Wexley, is designed for a narrow lot in the center of a city block. The 26’x48’ floor plan is divided into thirds from front to back and from left to right. In plan, the left third is reserved for circulation spaces and is reflected in elevation by a monolithic block wall in three shades of gray. Punching through this block wall, in three distinct parts, are the main levels windows for the stair tower, bathroom, and patio. The right two thirds of the main level are reserved for the living room, kitchen, and dining room. At 16’ long, front to back, these three rooms align perfectly with the three-part block wall façade. It’s this interplay between plan and elevation that creates cohesion between each façade, no matter where it’s viewed. Given that this project would have neighbors on either side, great care was taken in crafting desirable vistas for the living, dinning, and master bedroom. Upstairs, with a view to the street, the master bedroom has a pair of closets and a skillfully planned bathroom complete with soaker tub and separate tiled shower. Main level cabinetry and built-ins serve as dividing elements between rooms and framing elements for views outside.

A modern refresh of an historic guest quarters that takes advantage of the beautiful California weather by maximizing the connection to the outdoors.
