Hood House is a playful protector that respects the heritage character of Carlton North whilst celebrating purposeful change. It is a luxurious yet compact and hyper-functional home defined by an exploration of contrast: it is ornamental and restrained, subdued and lively, stately and casual, compartmental and open. For us, it is also a project with an unusual history. This dual-natured renovation evolved through the ownership of two separate clients. Originally intended to accommodate the needs of a young family of four, we shifted gears at the eleventh hour and adapted a thoroughly resolved design solution to the needs of only two. From a young, nuclear family to a blended adult one, our design solution was put to a test of flexibility. The result is a subtle renovation almost invisible from the street yet dramatic in its expressive qualities. An oblique view from the northwest reveals the playful zigzag of the new roof, the rippling metal hood. This is a form-making exercise that connects old to new as well as establishing spatial drama in what might otherwise have been utilitarian rooms upstairs. A simple palette of Australian hardwood timbers and white surfaces are complimented by tactile splashes of brass and rich moments of colour that reveal themselves from behind closed doors. Our internal joke is that Hood House is like Lazarus, risen from the ashes. We’re grateful that almost six years of hard work have culminated in this beautiful, protective and playful house, and so pleased that Glenda and Alistair get to call it home.

The bold design is an honest expression of its site constraints. The form weaves its structure in and around the larger trees, and seems to float above the landscape on thin steel legs. The building is connected to its mountain surroundings by the large expanses of glass and outdoor terraces. The vegetated roof is interrupted only by the simple, roof gables that mark the primary spaces below. The site provides the inspiration for design, and also provides a source of energy through geothermal heat pumps and solar photovoltaic panels. Tall stone walls mark the front entrance of this Rocky Point home. A large driveway design with incorporated grass and a two-car garage with a light grey automatic door is featured in the design of the residence. A lush landscape blooms in the background, while glimpses of the interior of the home are revealed through the floor-to-ceiling glass.

A large residence with eight bedrooms ensuite for the owner and guests. The residence has a Great Room that includes kitchen and rear prep kitchen, dining area and living area with two smaller rooms facing the front for more casual gatherings. The Great Room has large four panel bi-parting pocketed doors and screens that open to deep front and rear covered porches for entertaining. The tower off the front entrance contains a wine room at its base,. A square stair wrapping around the wine room leads up to a middle level with large circular windows. A spiral stair leads up to the top level with an inner glass enclosure and exterior covered deck with two balconies for wine tasting. Two story bedroom wings flank a pool in the center, Each of the bedrooms have their own bathroom and exterior garden spaces. The rear central courtyard also includes outdoor dining covered with trellis with woven willow.

Nestled into sloping topography, the design of this home allows privacy from the street while providing unique vistas throughout the house and to the surrounding hill country and downtown skyline. Layering rooms with each other as well as circulation galleries, insures seclusion while allowing stunning downtown views. The owners' goals of creating a home with a contemporary flow and finish while providing a warm setting for daily life was accomplished through mixing warm natural finishes such as stained wood with gray tones in concrete and local limestone. The home's program also hinged around using both passive and active green features. Sustainable elements include geothermal heating/cooling, rainwater harvesting, spray foam insulation, high efficiency glazing, recessing lower spaces into the hillside on the west side, and roof/overhang design to provide passive solar coverage of walls and windows. This lovely, contemporary lakeside home underwent a major renovation that also involved a two-story addition. Every room’s design takes full advantage of the stunning lake view. First floor changes include all new flooring from Urban Floor, foyer update, expanded great room, patio with fireplace and hot tub, office area, laundry room, and a main bedroom and bath. Second-floor changes include all new flooring from Urban Floor, a workout room with sauna, lounge, and a balcony with an iron spiral staircase descending to the first-floor patio. The exterior transformation includes stained cedar siding offset with natural stone cladding, a metal roof, and a wrought iron entry door my Monarch. This custom wrought iron front door with three panels of glass to let in natural light.

This Dover Shores, Newport Beach home was built with a young hip Newport Beach family in mind. Bright and airy finishes were used throughout, with a modern twist. The palette is neutral with lots of geometric blacks, whites and grays. Cement tile, beautiful hardwood floors and natural stone were used throughout. The designer collaborated with the builder on all finishes and fixtures inside and out to create an inviting and impressive home.Shak Cinema
