Opened up the kitchen and dining room to create one large open kitchen and dining space with a large boat shaped island. Vinyl plank Lifeproof flooring was used due to the house being on a slab and on the lake. The cabinets are a white shaker from Holiday Kitchens. The tops are granite. A custom cable rail system was installed for the stairway and open loft area on the 2nd floor.

Laminate countertops are not used often in our designs. Client did not want hard surface countertops as loves the ease of use laminate provides. Our in house Jr Designer, Alanna Harvey selected a cozy modern warm grey subway tile to accent the warm grey in the laminate counters. This is a High Definition laminate by Formica. The Paradise model Accessory Trailer Unit By Paradise Tiny Homes and Ellie K. Design built on a trailer for easy transport and flexibility. This galley kitchen has quartz countertops and mango wood siding, custom cabinetry in white, and rustic exposed beams that support the loft above. Extra storage is found above the counters where copper pipes extend through the beams giving endless places for hooks to hang pots, mugs, and other kitchen items. an undermount skink gives a clean counter space, easy to clean, and awning windows keep a breeze flowing through and everything light and bright even under the loft. This open concept kitchen combined an existing kitchen and dining room to create an open plan kitchen to fit this large family's needs. Removing the dividing wall and adding a live edge bar top allows the entire group to cook and dine together.

Our design process is set up to tease out what is unique about a project and a client so that we can create something peculiar to them. When we first went to see this client, we noticed that they used their fridge as a kind of notice board to put up pictures by the kids, reminders, lists, cards etc… with magnets onto the metal face of the old fridge. In their new kitchen they wanted integrated appliances and for things to be neat, but we felt these drawings and cards needed a place to be celebrated and we proposed a cork panel integrated into the cabinet fronts… the idea developed into a full band of cork, stained black to match the black front of the oven, to bind design together. It also acts as a bit of a sound absorber (important when you have 3yr old twins!) and sits over the splash back so that there is a lot of space to curate an evolving backdrop of things you might pin to it. In this design, we wanted to design the island as big table in the middle of the room. The thing about thinking of an island like a piece of furniture in this way is that it allows light and views through and around; it all helps the island feel more delicate and elegant… and the room less taken up by island. The frame is made from solid oak and we stained it black to balance the composition with the stained cork. The sink run is a set of floating drawers that project from the wall and the flooring continues under them - this is important because again, it makes the room feel more spacious. The full height cabinets are purposefully a calm, matt off white. We used Farrow and Ball ’School house white’… because its our favourite ‘white’ of course! All of the whitegoods are integrated into this full height run: oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and a gigantic pantry cupboard. A sweet detail is the hand turned cabinet door knobs - The clients are music lovers and the knobs are enlarged versions of the volume knob from a 1970s record player.

We took a builder basic home and did what others said could not be done. We removed a structural wall that divided the family room -dining area with the living room. Moved the kitchen from its original layout to face the backyard with a view the whole family could enjoy. We focus on clean, simple lines, minimalism, and functionality without sacrificing beauty. White walls, wood floors, modern furniture, and minimalist decor are all hallmark traits of a California aesthetic. A lot of cost were invested into changing the structure so we keep the materials simple, but we were still able to add wood features in the home like the island, the warm toned light fixture centered over the island adds depth to this personal home.
