Lincoln Lighthill Architect employed several discrete updates that collectively transform this existing row house. At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight. On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air. Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat. Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design. Il bagno principale è stato ricavato in uno spazio stretto e lungo dove si è scelto di collocare la doccia a ridosso della finestra e addossare i sanitari ed il lavabo su un lato per permettere una migliore fruizione dell’ambiente. L’uso della resina in continuità tra pavimento e soffitto e lo specchio che corre lungo il lato del bagno, lo rendono percettivamente più ampio e accogliente.

A 'slow-designed' bathroom that places importance on using sustainable materials while supporting the community at large. It is our belief that beautiful bathrooms don't have to cost our earth. Our goal with this project was to use materials that were kinder to our planet while still offering a design impact through aesthetics. We scouted for tile suppliers who are conscious of their environmental impact and found a Canadian maker of the terrazzo tile. It is a mix of marble, granite and natural stone aggregate hand cast in a cement base. We then paired that with a ceramic tile, one of the most eco-friendly options and partnered with local tradespeople to craft this highly functional and statement-making bathroom.

This bathroom just off the entry way serves as the designated bathroom for the bunk room next door. With dual sinks, toilet stalls and shower stalls, this bathroom easily accommodates a crowd. The freestanding vanity is custom made in knotty alder, hosts dual natural stone 16" vessel sinks with Brizo Litze single handle wall mounted faucets in luxe nickel. Vanity lights are from Bridlewood in brushed nickel. Homeowners provided the mirror and decorative ladder, which will serve as a towel rack. Flooring is polished concrete, with natural finish, complimented by 2.5" knotty alder base. Walls and ceiling are painted with Benjamin Moore's "Dulche de Leche."
