Dear Houzz, Every renovator knows how difficult it was to get rid of popcorn ceilings. Not any more! It is easy! This is because of a new product, which is popular in Europe, but only just beginning to appear here. We have used it in three of the rooms (entrance hall, kitchen, family room) in our 50 year-old split-level house, to cover the popcorn ceilings. The wow factor is huge! Extenzo stretched ceilings...yes ... stretched! The ceilings come in 110 colours, in various textures from reflective to matt, semi-gloss to satin, and are easily installed by Extenzo, a family-operated business, based in Gatineau (nr. Ottawa), Quebec. The ceilings are basically a special type of vinyl (which does NOT attract dust, by the way!). Each ceiling is made to measure, then stretched at 45C across the old ceiling, in order to cover it completely (plus any other defects, cracks, unevenness, etc.), after which it is pressed into previously installed extrusions around the edge of the room. The ceilings are amazing! No maintenance involved, either! If the home owner tires of his colour or texture, simply he/she can simply choose something different, remove the present ceiling and within a matter of a few days, he/she can have a new ceiling up there! It is quick and it is easy! LEDs can also be installed above/behind the ceiling if one so wishes, thus providing what appears to be daylight, in a walk-in closet, for example. Pictures and paintings can be printed onto the ceiling. Two or more colours can be used for an even greater wow factor. We ourselves chose a soft grey reflective colour. Our three rooms now have what looks like cathedral ceilings, but they aren't, really! It is merely the reflection of the windows and the lights in the ceiling above, from the room itself below, which gives this impression. Everyone who has seen our ceilings has been bowled over by the cleanliness of the look (no more popcorn ceilings...hurrah!), and by the reflective qualities which make each room look twice its size. For this reason, too, some local (Ottawa and Gatineau) condo builders are installing these stretched ceilings, to make small condos instantly look bigger!
