I have used Transport King for almost 5 years, moving my offices and personal residences. And everytime they have delivered the very best and professional moves. SUMMARY
Our experience with Transport King was negative. Although Jason King (the owner and CEO) at first seemed responsive and professional, those qualities evaporated as the move went on.
The movers showed up late — hours beyond the two hour window we were given — and took far longer to pack and load than we anticipated. Perhaps because of poor time management, the movers did a sloppy job packing and padding our furniture.
They tossed our pictures and paintings in the back of our car (which they were also shipping), which meant that essentially all of our custom picture frames broke during the cross-country move. That resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to furniture, the picture frames, lamps, lampshades, and a painting.
Worse, despite acknowledging the damages during the unpacking and agreeing to discuss them, Jason King disappeared after the move and has refused to compensate us for anything. After responding to one e-mail, he has ignored multiple follow up e-mails, text messages, messages on Thumbtack, and phone calls.
MORE DETAILS
We moved from San Francisco, California to Washington, DC. We paid for full packing and unpacking in addition to loading and moving our items across the country.
Jason King and one other mover arrived without their own boxes or truck, and instead purchased boxes and rented a truck from U-Haul. But they had trouble finding a U-Haul to rent, which resulted in hours of delay during the loading phase.
Moreover, the movers did not have enough boxes or packing material to appropriately pack our home. Nor did they have enough manpower; two movers ended up not being enough to load a three bedroom, three bathroom home in one day. That caused the movers to work long into the night, blocking the street and disturbing our neighbors.
Jason and the other mover did a slipshod job packing our stuff. Instead of packing books in small book boxes, they packed them in extra-large boxes. And instead of padding our custom pictures frames, paintings, lamps, and lampshades, Jason and his employee didn’t box or pad them at all. In an effort to save time, Jason and the other mover simply threw the pictures and paintings in the back of our car, hitched the car to the U-Haul, and drove it across the country. Not surprisingly, the custom picture frames mostly broke in transit, and most of the lamps are scratched.
Nor did Jason and his other mover adequately pad our furniture. Several large pieces of furniture have new significant scratches (e.g., desk, chest of drawers). Most disturbingly, our dining table and two chairs have several deep gouges (not just surface scratches) that are irreparable. Transport King has refused to compensate us (or more specifically, they have not responded to our emails, phone calls, or text messages requesting compensation).
The movers also missed one kitchen cabinet and an entire guest room closet, which we discovered after they already left. We paid $350 to ship essential items ourselves and gave away other items.
On arriving in DC, the unpacking experience was equally unpleasant. We chose Transport King principally because they guaranteed a specific delivery date on a Saturday, when I could help my wife (who is taking care of our five month old infant) supervise the unloading. But they missed that date and arrived two days later, on a Monday. (To the company’s credit, they paid for us to stay in a hotel for those two nights). On the move-in day, the movers were again many hours late, missed the two hour window they had given us, and did not arrive until mid-afternoon. This time, they brought four movers (again including Jason King), but still had to work late into the night again.
The movers’ delay meant that I could not help my wife supervise the move, because I had to be at work on Monday. Moreover, my mother had flown out to take care of the baby during the move, and she had to pay a significant amount of money to change her flight on a holiday weekend. We had told her that it was OK to book a non-refundable flight, because the movers had guaranteed the delivery date.
During unpacking, the movers also could not find the screws for our baby’s crib. This caused a major inconvenience as we had to re-order custom screws, which took a week to arrive. As we unpacked our stuff, we also noticed that there was no rhyme or reason to how the movers had packed it; chaos was the only animating principle.
Finally, after finishing unloading, the movers took a gigantic stack of boxes and — inexplicably — simply left them on the curb. To avoid getting fined by the City, my wife had to figure out how to dispose of the boxes the next morning.
We moved across the country with United Van Lines a little more than 2 years ago. For a lower price, they used a larger team, completed better packaging and padding (e.g., boxed lamp shades and all picture frames), and did not significantly damage or lose any of our items. As noted above, the main advantage we saw for the Transport King was that they guaranteed our desired delivery date and United could not; however, Transport King was not able to deliver on the date promised, damaged our items and refused to compensate us.

Dealing with this company and its employees is like the nightmare that will never end. I originally had thought that I would be getting a fast and easy moving service, but don't be fooled by the smooth talker on the other end of the phone line. The movers showed up 8 hours late to move my stuff out. That was a lot of fun. They wouldn't call me to update me on their location or anything. I was beginning to think that this was a scam.
After that fiasco, they moved my stuff back to me across the country, and that's where things got really interesting. I got a phone call from my wife telling me that our very expensive new grill got broken during the move. The movers had the gumption to tell me that it was my fault because it "wasn't taped sufficiently", but what kind of a mover flips boxes over? Apparently, these guys do.
When it was all said and done my grill was broken, my Sony sound bar was missing, and I had to give a good review and 5 star rating in order to receive any type of reimbursement. I still have not received any type of reimbursement, so when I filed a dispute claim with my credit company Transport King decided to charge me some more money.
If you are reading this please don't make the same mistake I did. Do you and your loved ones a favor and go with the true professionals who actually have an HR team, accounting team, etc. instead of just one crooked owner and his lovely band of thieves.
