Andy at Made to Last has been by our side as we continue our hunt for the perfect property. He has spent hours with us on the phone and in person, working through different options for specific properties as we consider which one to purchase. He's given advice and suggestions that have proven to be essential in our decision making. We're still looking for the right property, but as questions arise about how we may renovate or build a new structure, Andy will be the one we contact.

We built with Made To Last starting in the fall of 2019. Everything about our experience was fantastic. Communication, budget and quality of work were super important to us. Our experience with Made to Last in totally renovating our gulf island home has been exceptional. From our very first discussions about renovating, to finalizing the last finishes, the Made to Last team exceeded all of our expectations. Our project manager was exceptional, as was everyone on the MTL team. Building on a gulf island poses unique challenges, but the entire team tackled each hurdle with enthusiasm, skill, and efficiency. I've had the pleasure of working with the team at Made to Last Custom Homes on a couple of recent projects, one residential and one commercial. As an Interior Designer, I have worked with a variety of contractors in various capacities. From the beginning what impressed me with Made to Last was their thorough communication procedures and their meticulous attention to executing the myriad details to exceed their client's expectations. Made To Last built our guesthouse/farm storage building on our property and we couldn’t be more pleased with our experience. The location where we chose to build had its challenges with permitting etc, due to its proximity to a riparian area, but the team at MTL helped us get through it all and made our dreams come true! We loved working with MTL. Their staff and sub trades were very professional and did exceptional work. Everyone who comes through our guesthouse is amazed at the quality of workmanship. This was our first time hiring a builder and the whole process can be a bit daunting at first, but we felt supported throughout the whole venture. I have had the pleasure to work with Made To Last Custom Homes on residential projects. The first opportunity was a renovation. Andy Renton was the project manager and brought the necessary skills required for the complexity of the renovation. Made to Last built our custom home in Chemainus in 2018-19. We were thrilled to have the project completed on time and under budget. Made to Last is a rare builder that offers best-estimate budgeting (as opposed to many builders who will estimate low, with the expectation that the project will ultimately run over budget), excellent customer service (including many helpful tips and suggestions throughout the project), and first-rate quality. All of the MTL team and subcontractors were professional and supportive, and delivered excellent work. The result for us is a beautiful home that works perfectly for our family and that will stand the test of time. These guys delivered on time and pretty much on budget. Where we went over, it was driven by our own decision to upgrade. In a heated building environment to stay on course with a complex build and have 90% of your sub-contractors deliver excellent work and outstanding customer service is quite an achievement. The remaining 10% were either a little sloppy in execution or lax on working with the client, but all was expediently fixed and good in the end. M2L are great to work with and they give you realistic budgets (not bait-and-switch) and timelines they can keep. You'd be hard pressed to find a better builder in the Cowichan Valley (Vancouver Island).

As an interior designer, I have been party to several new builds for clients, but to be honest, have never had the courage to build a home of my own. I had heard horror stories about the stress involved in a new build, not to mention witnessing it as a designer. The market being what it was, however, a new build was the only option we had. My husband and I are all about doing our “due diligence.” We didn’t pick the first builder to whom we spoke. We interviewed several after seeking referrals from locals, and we called references. In the end, we chose Made to Last Custom Homes. I could say it was because of their glowing references, but I’m a realist—no one puts a bad reference on their resume. Rather we chose Made to Last because we followed our (my) gut instinct. I just had a feeling about them. I believed they wouldn’t let me down—and that was/is really important in a world where we find ourselves often disappointed. I’m not going to say that the build was without challenges. The key is how those challenges were managed. We could always count on Steven Fitzpatrick to discuss any issues that arose, and he always made it right, even when it affected his bottom line. Steven and Matt Buckle (our project manager) were never ones to point the finger at anyone else, but rather took accountability—another rare trait these days. One of the most challenging aspects of any new build relates to financing and restrictive draw schedules from banks. In order to manage any potential conflict, I provided Steven with our draw schedule at the outset, and always kept the lines of communication open. If there was going to be delay in payment, I called Steven and explained it. He was always understanding and reasonable, and I appreciated the fact that we were able to discuss matters with civility and mutual respect. The list of how Steven Fitzpatrick, Matt Buckle and the Made to Last team went above and beyond is long. Suffice it to say, my gut was right—we weren’t disappointed. The Made to Last team delivered our forever home, and we are absolutely in love with it. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Made to Last Custom Homes to anyone, and in fact, am very much looking forward to working with them on future projects with my clients.
