Louis Fry / Fine Handmade Furniture

Louis Fry creates high quality art that is disguised as furniture. We overlook this fact because of the everyday functionality of his pieces. Yet, Louis' unique creations fit the traditional definition of art, "an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power," (English Oxford). Perhaps Louis' furniture may be better liken to a design of Frank Lloyd Wright, which had practical function in addition to aesthetic beauty.. Louis has designed and crafted three pieces of furniture for Teresa and me. The most recent is a morning room table with a glass top that allows us to peer through the glass to witness the beauty of the wood design while we eat. In addition, Louis has created a dresser and a sideboard for us. Not only are all three pieces unique and appealing to the eye, but the drawers and cabinet spaces are as finely crafted on the inside as the outside. On all three pieces of furniture, Louis worked with us to translate our ideas into drawings that we could approve before construction. Louis also brought out wood samples for our selection, and then kept us updated on the progress of the work. We even took the opportunity to visit Louis' shop during the creation of each piece. It would be hard to conceive of a furniture piece that Louis could not translate from concept into completed form. Whereas the other furniture in our home will have a finite life, Teresa and I plan to pass Louis' creations onto our children. In the meantime, we look forward to our time of enjoyment and use.

For almost forty years, Texas custom furniture legend Louis Fry has been refining his craft, one piece at a time, in the solitude of his workshop in Dripping Springs outside of Austin. A self-taught woodworker from a seemingly different time and place, Louis works primarily in exotic and American hardwoods, while his ability to design breathtaking pieces in styles ranging from Art Deco to Art Nouveau and from Contemporary to Traditional, has earned him a national reputation with his clients, while at the same time achieving peer recognition in a number of well-known publications, such as Architectural Digest, Texas Monthly, and International Wood magazines. The six pieces of furniture that Louis has built for me, over twenty years ago, continue to be a source of great enjoyment on a daily basis, while my family members and close friends try to convince me that I should will them one of Louis' pieces upon my passing. We had been looking for a particular piece of furniture for well over a decade that we had seen in a photograph. We looked in stores, on the internet, antique shops, etc. to no avail. We had the good fortune to be introduced to Louis Fry; we showed him the picture, he understood, prepared sketches and not too long after that, we had the piece of furniture from our futile search realized in front of us, personally handmade and of the best quality. The piece lived up to and exceeded our imaginations. We cannot recommend him highly enough.

This guy's talent is amazing. I had seen his work and ordered one of his chaise lounges. It arrived as requested, to my specifications and on time. He sent me pictures as it was in process. As he was working on it, I asked for a matching leather pillow cover, and he made that happen! I have it now and I still go in and just look at it! Gorgeous!!! People who see it always ask "Where did you buy that?!" He's also the nicest person you could ever hope to deal with--an artist with a real respect for both craftsmanship and customer service.
