Grimm's Gardens

This review is specific to Grimm's Gardens mail order business for deciduous trees. My first order for (2) $100 trees was ok. One had some minor pruning issues and the other had two co-dominant stems. Figure I give them another shot and placed another order for $500 worth of trees. Every single tree had issues. One of the trees was an 1-1/4" caliper tree that was severely root bound in a 7 gallon pot, then had several feet of 1/2" caliper topped so it could ship. Next we have an oak with severe dieback, crown thinning, co-domominat stems and chlorosis. The rest either had large encircling roots from being overgrown in the pot or serious co-doms low on the trees. I was told all the issues where standard industry practice and that the co-doms are left to increase caliper (this is commonly down for laterally branching not co-dominants). In addition the chlorosis was called out as fall color. They finally agreed to replace the worst plant. Of course they shipped it 1.5 weeks later than they said they would and it arrived late November in zone 5a when it was 20 degrees. To cap it off the tree had a canker. I'm very disappointed that there is a nursery out there that actually ships product like this and thinks its ok. Update 12/11/17: I'm a bit disappointing that Grimm's followed up and still thinks that the trees where going dormant with fall color and that the crowns where left as is to increase caliper. A couple plants showed classic signs of chlorois with yellowing leaf tissue and green veins. Another sign is that distinct sections showed these symptoms where other sections look completely normal. Lastly LATERALS are maintained to increase caliper. These are easily identified by the presence of branch collars and angle of stem. The co-dominants need to be removed as its much more difficult for the plant to heal once you remove these co-dom due to the lack of a branch collar. The longer you leave them the included bark develops at the crotch angle. As the pics show only those that are experienced would know to start out with subordination pruning, otherwise you are left removing 50% of the crown. Since this review I had to trash a couple of the plants. The others are putting out contorted growth due to the irreconcilable root girdling. My hope with this review is that Grimm's acknowledges the issues and does not ship this type of quality to others that aren't as experienced with plants.

Rebecca was excellent to work with and did an awesome job designing my yard. She was always prompt in returning calls. This was the second yard Rebecca designed for us.

We had a retaining wall built a couple years ago by Grimms. We just had landscaping done by Grimms. That included pavers and plantings. Both projects turned out amazing & beautiful! Grimms Garden have Great people to work with.

I can't say enough good things about Grimm's Gardens. From the design process all the way through to project completion, we have been very happy with the work that they have done. Our project was finished quickly and the results are just beautiful. I would highly recommend Grimm's!
