For the last few years, I've been combining acrylic and collage elements into abstract compositions. I start playing with large, general shapes and keep things simple at first. As the forms evolve, they trigger new ideas which then form the basis for further exploration. It's a continuous, internally-generated process. At some point, I may completely mask out selected areas with flat, more neutral color. Or I may go back and forth with dynamic variations in transparency, color intensity, line, thickness or texture. If the work becomes bogged down in irrelevant detail, I return to large, general shapes. In my landscapes and figurative work, I like to explore shifting or ambiguous context and narrative as a kind of platform or structure on which to develop overlays. What I'm aiming for is a balance and unity in the composition that provides the viewer with a refreshing new perspective.
