In 2007 began work with Barry Wachtel at his studio Abitare. After various deposits made for custom cabinetry, among other things, he declared bankruptcy. Would have been nice to have that happen before we wrote checks. Additionally, clients' monies were not kept it segregated accounts, so we lost over $20k. Work was, of course, not completed. Nothing we could do. Barry never attempted to make us whole.

It's always a pleasure to work alongside Barry Wachtel, a designer we have been working with since 1999. My staff and I are honored to be considered for new projects and to work with him because he has a long history of very intense installations, working with all the finest materials and he understands the construction and finish trades thoroughly. Hylan builds to Barry's drawings and specifications and collaborates where we can. He is very open to ideas that our staff of designers, craftsmen and engineers comes up with. He teaches us the better approach at every opportunity.

Barry designed a beautiful and very useful entertainment wall for our new retirement apartment. His suggestion to use travertine as a counter top for serving appetizers makes this more than just a place to use our technology, but also allows expands the dining area. He is very low key and easy to work with.t push. We are so happy with his design and also his helpful ideas regarding where to hang our pictures.

Barry transformed an add-on studio apartment by adding beautifully designed cabinetry, a library, desk area and storage spaces galore. He also did terrific work on our bedroom. The work was done on time as promised, the cost was a bit below the estimate, Barry was patient, pleasant to work with, very attentive to details, and a talented problem-solver. We couldn't be happier with the outcome!

We bought a 3250 sq foot penthouse in a high rise that was a concrete shell. Barry completely transformed our unit, handling everything from little touches like installing a fireplace and humidifier to providing blueprints and then executing complete build outs with custom cabinetry, wall units, etc. From the custom designed carpets to the custom built furniture, Barry took our ideas and blew them out of the park hitting a giant home run. Everyone's jaw drops when they walk into our place. We had so much fun over the course of the year shopping for fabrics and lights and little touches. My favorite thing about our unit is the soffit uplighting that runs through every room - very art deco. But, one of the best things to come of the experience (aside from our fabulous condo) is Barry and Sunny's friendship. :-)

Barry Wachtel is great. He was easy to work with, creative, and responsive to our needs. We moved from a large condo to one half the size. Barry made a double dresser and night stands for our bedroom, an audil/visual center for our den with excellent storage space and glass shelving, and a full-wall piece for our office with double desks, file drawers and book shelves. It is all very attractive, looks "built in", solved our storage problems, and can easily be removed if we should move again. Barry also applied his creative talent to the placement of our art work . My husband and I recommend him highly.

Barry Wachtel made the process of renovating my apartment stress-free and fun. The project included a gut renovation of two bathrooms- updating them while restoring them to their vintage style, refinishing floors, general repairs throughout the apartment, and bringing a personal touch to the apartment's decor. Barry had fantastic, creative ideas, helped me make smart choices, and brought excellent people to work on every aspect of the job. I was always impressed by their attention to detail. Throughout I felt like Barry and his team communicated frequently and were attentive to my concerns, including concerns about keeping the costs down. The job was finished on time. It was my first time doing major renovations to my (first) home, and I could not have had a better experience. I would recommend Barry to anyone looking for someone to help make their space their own.

I contracted with Barry to manage all aspects of the remodel of my high rise condominium. From the beginning to the end of the project two things were apparent. Barry has an exceptional skill of listening to his clients desires, which enables him to design the HOME they are most comfortable in, he has a focus on quality work from his pool of craftsmen, all with the goal of maximum value. I was so pleased, I rehired him for a lake house remodel.
