Designing a new staircase to connect all three levels freed up space for this kitchen. Before, my client had to squeeze through a narrow opening in the corner of the kitchen to access an equally narrow stair to the basement. In the process of evaluating the space we discovered there was no foundation under the kitchen walls! Noticing that the entry to their home was little used--everyone came right in to the kitchen--gave me the idea that we could connect the kitchen to the entry and convert it into a pantry! The architectural vocabulary draws upon British Colonial precedents in the West Indies with masonry-stucco walls, a standing seam metal hip roof with a kick at the eaves, a wooden balcony supported by wood brackets on the more public street facade, and a wooden gallery atop hefty masonry columns framed with wood brackets on the more private waterfront façade. These features have been developed and refined over hundreds of years to accommodate comfortable living in the Caribbean and have evolved into a living tradition of beautiful vernacular architecture that is, as a result, truly sustainable. The covered outdoor spaces in conjunction with the protected courts, deep overhangs and operable wood shutters provide a sustainable home that respects the context and climate, maximizes energy-efficiency and minimizes environmental impact. The simple massing and layout of this house with its simple and flexible spaces can accommodate many different family types and lifestyles and can even change uses as market demands change over time. These characteristics together with a timeless elegance and beauty support the firmness, commodity and delight required for truly sustainable living.

Looking lengthwise down the galley-style kitchen. Although it is a smaller kitchen, it has been designed for maximum convenience and has abundant storage.

This custom IKEA kitchen remodel was designed by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room expanding the space creating a larger kitchen with eat-in island. The custom IKEA cabinet fronts and walnut cabinets were built by Dendra Doors. We created a custom exhaust hood for under $1,800 using the IKEA DATID fan insert and building a custom surround painted white with walnut trim providing a minimalistic appearance at an affordable price. The tile on the back of the island was hand painted and imported to us finishing off this quirky one of a kind kitchen.

The Barefoot Bay Cottage is the first-holiday house to be designed and built for boutique accommodation business, Barefoot Escapes (www.barefootescapes.com.au). Working with many of The Designory’s favourite brands, it has been designed with an overriding luxe Australian coastal style synonymous with Sydney based team. The newly renovated three bedroom cottage is a north facing home which has been designed to capture the sun and the cooling summer breeze. Inside, the home is light-filled, open plan and imbues instant calm with a luxe palette of coastal and hinterland tones. The contemporary styling includes layering of earthy, tribal and natural textures throughout providing a sense of cohesiveness and instant tranquillity allowing guests to prioritise rest and rejuvenation. The living room revolves around the botanical painting which influences the choice of furnishings of the furniture around. The all white flooring symbolises the snow and the copper chinnar leaves scattered on the floor bring in the flavour of the fall season. The vertical fins on pivot add an element of privacy to the dinning area as well as create an interesting and playful element in living space.
