This kitchen design in Holt, MI features two-toned textured laminate kitchen cabinets from Diamond Distinction Cabinets from MasterBrand. The darker toned cabinetry is used for the kitchen island, cabinets surrounding the refrigerator, and for the base cabinets, while the upper cabinets are a lighter finish. An MSI linear glass mosaic tile backsplash and Cambria quartz countertop pulls together the color scheme where the two cabinetry colors meet. The cabinets have ample customized storage including built-in spice racks and a pantry with rollout trays. A bi-level peninsula separates the kitchen from the living and dining areas, and includes bar seating for casual dining. A double bowl undermount sink is located in the peninsula, and GE black slate appliances feature throughout the kitchen. Homecrest Cascade luxury vinyl tile flooring finishes off this transitional design with a splash of rustic tones.

Cabinetry: The cabinetry features an Elmwood Full Access Frameless, with a Mirabeau 2-3/4” rail door style, 1-pc MDF construction. The sink wall cabinets, range wall cabinets, island cabinets, and dry bar are a Vienna Fog satin paint. The kitchen tall cabinets, and built-in TV area are a Caviar stain paint with custom mullions and antique mirror inserts. Countertops: This kitchen features 3 cm Caesarstone Vanilla Bean quartz countertops. Backsplash: The backsplash features a Calacatta Avant Garde marble slab, book-matched at the center of the the range/hood area, single slab pieces above the sink (8.5" high) and at the bar area (from countertop to bottom of wall cabinets). Fixtures: From Newport Brass, East Linear pull-down faucet, a Jacobean air disposal switch, and a sink strainer, all in Satin Brass. From Rohl, an Allia Single Bowl Undermount Fireclay Sink in white. Hardware: A mixture of Schoolhouse Electric hex knobs and Edgecliff pulls (varying sizes based on drawer width), in their natural brass finish Flooring: The flooring features an engineered wood in D&M Silver Oak Pearl Gray, 1/2" x 7-1/2" engineered wood floor, random planks. Window/Door: Pella 450 Proline 3-panel sliding contemporary door with a matching Pella casement window, satin nickel hardware.

This award-winning classic + transitional + retro kitchen remodel was part of multi-room home remodeling and interior design project. The clients wanted to include some mid-century modern elements, but didn't want the room to feel like a capsule space. We used classic slab door style kitchen cabinets in a cherry finish and a muted aqua color palette in the finishes and custom elements. Another goal was to create a space that would easily convert from small family meals to large holiday gatherings. To accommodate this request, we added a custom booth on the back of the peninsula, a large bar/buffet, a vintage teak table with butterfly leaves, and extra seating bench. To top it off, we added the glamorous gold leaf oversized pendant, which steals the show without being out of proportion to the space.

“With the open-concept floor plan, this kitchen needed to have a galley layout,” Ellison says. A large island helps delineate the kitchen from the other rooms around it. These include a dining area directly behind the kitchen and a living room to the right of the dining room. This main floor also includes a small TV lounge, a powder room and a mudroom. The house sits on a slope, so this main level enjoys treehouse-like canopy views out the back. The bedrooms are on the walk-out lower level.“These homeowners liked grays and neutrals, and their style leaned contemporary,” Ellison says. “They also had a very nice art collection.” The artwork is bright and colorful, and a neutral scheme provided the perfect backdrop for it. They also liked the idea of using durable laminate finishes on the cabinetry. The laminates have the look of white oak with vertical graining. The galley cabinets are lighter and warmer, while the island has the look of white oak with a gray wash for contrast. The countertops and backsplash are polished quartzite. The quartzite adds beautiful natural veining patterns and warm tones to the room.

THE SETUP Client Background: Our clients, a couple who have transitioned into the empty nest phase, have cherished their home for over three decades without undergoing any significant renovations. With a newfound desire to adapt their living space to better suit their current lifestyle, they’ve embarked on a journey to reimagine their kitchen — the heart of their home. Their aspiration is to cultivate a serene, neutral-toned sanctuary on the first floor that seamlessly merges with their family room, ensuring a harmonious and inviting environment. Design Inspiration: The renovation is inspired by the couple’s penchant for soft, calming neutrals, using their cherished family room and the kitchen’s existing tile flooring as the cornerstone for the color scheme. This approach aims to foster a sense of warmth and tranquility throughout. Design Objectives: Harmonize the kitchen with the family room by adopting a soothing, neutral color scheme, ensuring a seamless flow across the first floor. Enhance kitchen functionality with thoughtfully designed cabinetry, providing a designated place for every item and maximizing storage efficiency. Cultivate an inviting and comfortable atmosphere that reflects the homeowners’ desire for a calm and relaxing space. Design Challenges: The homeowners wish to retain the existing kitchen tile flooring and integrate it into a refreshed, modern design. Accommodating a dining area spacious enough for family visits without compromising the kitchen’s open feel or functional layout. Despite liking the current placement of plumbing and appliances, the homeowners aspire for a more open floor plan to facilitate better movement and interaction. The need to amplify natural light in the kitchen, especially around the sink area, where existing lighting is insufficient. Preserving the half-wall between the kitchen and family room, a feature the homeowners want to keep, while ensuring it complements the new design. THE RENEWED SPACE Design Solutions: By choosing a neutral color palette that complements the existing tile, the design unifies the kitchen with the adjacent spaces. The tile’s grout was cleaned and restored, enhancing the floor’s appearance and integrating it seamlessly with the new kitchen aesthetic. The inclusion of a larger island with seating for two, alongside maintaining a substantial dining table, was achieved by optimizing the spatial layout. This allowed for a sociable yet functional kitchen, accommodating large family gatherings without feeling crowded. Minor adjustments to the kitchen’s layout maintained the preferred locations for plumbing and appliances while introducing an ‘open’ design concept. Strategic modifications, such as angling the pantry wall, improved the flow and accessibility within the space. Replacing the garden window with a broader, standard window significantly increased natural light, transforming the sink area into a bright, welcoming space with enhanced views of the outdoors. The decision to keep the half-wall was ingeniously leveraged to define the dining area while maintaining an open connection to the family room. This feature not only serves as a visual separator but also ties the two spaces together through the shared color scheme and design elements. The homeowners are thrilled with their newly remodeled kitchen, which has become a hub of warmth and hospitality. Hosting a wedding shower and a birthday party, they have shared their renewed space with friends and family, who have been equally enamored. This remodel has not only met their functional and aesthetic desires but has also enriched their home with a fresh sense of serenity and joy. The upstairs part of the home is shaping up nicely. The contemporary style of slab doors plays nicely with rustic vertical woodgrains in this Rockville, MD kitchen refaced by Kitchen Saver. There was structural repair done on some existing cabinets and new cabinets were added. 2 stiles were removed and laminate was also applied to the interior for a lovely open shelf.
