Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2013

This is the Reader's Retreat from the Pasadena Showcase House 2013. This guest suite was built-out over a garage. The sloped-ceilings, which are an architectural feature of the space also provided some functional and spatial challenges. The area under the pitched ceilings tends to be hard to access space, so we added the built-ins to create storage under the sloped ceilings and to free up floorspace so we could center the bed on the one full height wall. The cabinetry also hides a TV. The art piece in the left corner is hinged and opens to reveal a TV on a swing arm. The bedroom has NE exposure. Most of the fabrics and finishes in the space are reflective or iridescent to keep the room feeling warm all day regardless of direct light. The panels over the headboard are an abalone shell wallpaper (not tile) which bounce light. The duvet is a citron silk and the headboard is an Ikat with a silver metallic weave. There is a custom-sized stencil on the ceiling in an iridescent champagne color that changes tone throughout the day. Photo taken by Peter Valli
