We added a pergola, with a porch swing, to the front of the home to create a more dramatic entry. The planting will develop into a floral delight, attracting birds, bees and butterflies.

The garden supports wildlife with water, native seeds, nectars and berries year round. It is a ready refuge should nearby wildspaces burn. In the meantime, it delights them and the humans who join them in the space!

After a couple of years, the mix of hardy perennials (Echinacea and, Rudbeckias) provides food for birds over the winter, nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies, and vivid colours to please the human eye. These plants are also dog-friendly, since the 2 dogs like to romp in the back yard; they are also edible for humans (if cultivated organically). Photo credit: E Jenvey

The client wanted a tropical-looking garden in his South-facing backyard, so an allée of very young, hardy palm trees was planted along the driveway. However, even the hardiest varieties of palms still need winter protection in this Canada 4b/5a - USDA Zone 4 climate. We obtained the expertise of a palm tree specialist in the Montreal area to purchase the hardiest palm varieties and ensure their successful survival over the winter. We planted them along the driveway (shown here at a 3-4 feet height, having already survived several winters here). The palm trees extend from the backstreet entrance all the way up to the house. We also added tropical-looking perennials in the bold colours the client preferred (see subsequent photos). Photo credit: E Jenvey
