Located in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula this addition helps to create a family home from the original 1960’s weekender. Although in good condition the late modernist home lacked the living spaces and good connections to the garden that the family required. The owners were very keen to honour and respect the original dwelling. Minimising change where possible especially to the finely crafted timber ceiling and dress timber windows typical of the period. The addition is located on a corner of the original house, east facing windows to the existing living spaces become west facing glazing to the additions. A new entry is located at the junction of old and new creating direct access from front to back.

This project included conservation and interior design works to this 1840s terrace house in Millers Point. The house is state heritage listed but is also located within a heritage conservation area. Prior to the works, the house had lost a lot of the original character. The basement sandstone walls were covered in cement render, cove cornices and other cheap and poorly thought out finishes had been applied throughout. A lot of restoration and conservation works were carried out but in a thoughtful way so as to avoid faux applications within the dwelling. Works to the house included a new kitchen and reconfiguration of the basement level to allow an internal bathroom and laundry. The dining room was carefully designed to include hidden lighting to illuminate the sandstone walls which were carefully exposed by hand by removing the cement render. Layers of paint were also removed to restore the hardwood details throughout the house. A new polished concrete slab was installed. Coming down the stairs into the Kitchen. the carved door is from a longhouse and leads to the Ensuite which doubles as a powder room. the galley kitchen to the left is separated from the living spaces by an off form concrete wall. The splash of red is the only colour in the spaces which is rich in raw materials such as concrete, steel and timber. the original timber stair was reused and extended with steel framing and steel mesh.
